This sounds a lot like a conversation that already happened before this that they decided to re-enact for the cameras and ham it up a little bit. The stuff about "come on, Dan, I don't want to add a seventh, we need players too" didn't sound like two guys having a serious real conversation to me.

It's all still interesting and it's very fun to watch this stuff, but I feel like this brand of Hard Knocks is less than 100% authentic and also less authentic than the ones where you have live action footage of practice and preseason games. I think the emotion is a lot more real there than it is with guys hanging around on couches in an office knowing everything they say will be on HBO in a few months.

I know they're friends. But I also know that they know they're being filmed, as does everyone else in this show. I think a lot of these conversations are executed in a way that keeps that in mind.

HK was filming for months, and there were fixed cameras in various offices.   They had no idea what would and wouldn't be used by HK.   I heard Mara talk about how he often forgot about the filming (at least initially) and then hoped he came off sounding okay.

Fair enough, although I'd say based on my impressions of both men and based on my general life experience that the younger, more modern day media-conscious Schoen was/is likely considerably more conscious of this type of stuff than the about to turn 70 Mara is.
