SMART, TOUGH, DEPENDABLE

An amazing human being, Alex Smith, for his personal determination to make it through what was a bleak situation. If you have never watched the film "Project 11," as graphic and, at times, almost unwatchable, do yourself a favor and watch it and it will forever transform your opinion of what human courage and the undoubtable will looks like through the darkest of days.

I cannot watch Project 11 without breaking down in tears after having survived a comparable, but a lesser scale of a situation, when my Achilles tore and had multiple complications where I, too, had exposed tendon and bone where my left heel used to be. Osteomyelitis settled in my bones and, for a time, I almost reached a point where I had to consider amputation of my lower leg. Fortunately, between an Infectious Disease specialist, a Chief of Plastic Surgery at the hospital and an Orthopedic Surgeon worked together to save my leg. The procedure to debride the infection out of the bone was successful. The Supra Flap, made of my calf, was flipped to close the hole down to my left heel and a PICC line was feeding me heavy antibiotics for six weeks straight while my post-op left leg was attached to a wound vacuum to ensure proper drainage and circulation. In a span that lasted almost two years, I was able to successfully walk and run again without bandages. The work required to protect the wounded area so my flap would take, grow adjoining flesh and skin and attach to the skin and flesh of that of my foot was a long process but eventually successful. By the grace of God, and the help of so many medical professionals, my wife who cared for me round the clock, my friends and co-workers who supported me, I never would have had a chance without them all. The event changed me forever. I used to take things such as my health for granted; I realized how quickly it can be taken away and without prior notice. I wake up every morning and pray giving thanks for another day to do God's work and not to complain about this or that aching or hurting. There are others far worse off than I am and I am grateful for what has been given to me.

Alex Smith is an inspiration for me and I am so proud of him for making his NFL comeback and being able to move on to live life with his family and that beautiful looking leg which was made possible by so many loving and caring individuals who helped him along his journey to recovery. May God bless them all.

His is a story of great inspiration.

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)
