Interesting, there were no reported signings to offset this.  Curious as to way the move was made.  Perhaps they don't want to guarantee Coughlin's full year's salary (that happens if is on the 53 man roster week one).  Perhaps Gunner is a no-go and they are signing a punt returner.

That's an interesting point, unless one comes today.

Are you allowed to go into a game day with fewer than 53 players?

Won't they be wasting one of 3 elevations a PS player can have?

Seems an odd move in light of Bobby O's restructure?

I remember some years back (I believe under Reese) where the injuries so depleted the salary cap reserve that they had less than a 53 man roster because they didn't have room (and didn't care to create some) to sign a replacement.

I don't believe this is related to the Bobby O restructure.  When a vested vet is on the roster week one, their full salary is guaranteed.  That means if you cut them later in the season, you are still on the hook for the salary.  So it's more about potential cap savings and guaranteed money than it is about staying under the cap.

As I mentioned earlier, I saw this once at the end of the season.  I have not witnessed this type of move so early in the season

I don't know enough to know if this is a dumb question, but could the move have anything to do with whether or not the Giants will suit up a 3rd QB for the Vikings game? Bob
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

To suit up the emergency 3rd QB, that QB needs to be on the active roster or be an elevation.   So, I can't see a scenario where that would play a role.

Rich: No surprise, but it was one obscure bit of info I acquired last night while catching up Daboll'd interviews done this week, so I thought I'd spitball it. Bob

I believe (my memory isn't the greatest) it was Jakob Johnson

Giants have an open roster spot that they will likely fill today. They need to free up a veteran spot on the practice squad if they want to add Jakob Johnson back to the PS today in time to elevate him for tomorrow. Maybe they do.
I could see releasing ILB Ty Summers or CB Duke Shelley to open that vet PS spot. Both are vested vets and seem unlikely to be elevated.
Carter Coughlin will be one PS elevation.
With Micah McFadden and Gunner Olszewski trending in right direction, second elevation is a bit of a mystery.
If they don't re-sign Jakob Johnson today, I could see Lawrence Cager coming up.
Doesn't make sense financially to sign one of the vets to the 53 and lock in the base salary as fully guaranteed.
So I could see one of the non-vested players on PS getting that 53 spot (Turbo Miller, Gervarrius Owens or Alex Johnson)

Miller would be my best guess with option as kick returner, but we'll see.
