Quote from: Ed Vette on September 07, 2024, 11:15:28 AMOne of the reasons he wasn't resigned was his injury history. Let's see what production the Giants get out of their backs. I take nothing away from him. He had a great game and made a difference.
Whose more injury prone:
Jones? Or Barkley?

Whose cap hit is lower:
Jones? Or Barkley?

Whose the better all around player:
Jones? Or Barkley?

Looks like a clean sweep in favor of Barkley. That said, this offseason was too late to address it. They should've tagged Jones and signed Barley 2 years ago.

Another Mara meddling causing all of us more agita.

From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

You don't pay old backs at least not with the roster we have.

You're 100% correct, Andrew.  However, I would add one caveat.  Barkley has, at best, 3 quality seasons remaining.  Theoretically, DJ has 7-to-9; I believe the Giants were looking at a protentional return on investment.  Regardless, I completely agreed that allowing Barkly to walk was the correct decision. By the time the Giants find a quality QB, and enough talent to compete with Dal and Phili, Barkly will be well past his prime.

While I am not a believer in the idea of Jones ever becoming a high end starting NFL QB, for multiple reasons, I don't think you can look at different positions in the apples to apples manner that you have above.

I understand your POV King...my opinion assumes that we continue "the rebuild" looking at cap hits and the evidence leaning toward DJ's longevity as a starter being less than 2 yrs from the start of this season.

We put a lot of resources in the OL, so we'll see how it all pans out. Perhaps it's neither who should've been kept in the end.

However if the line panned out, we had Barkley and a journeyman QB for the past year plus this year...and we nail a young stud QB in the draft with much more cap to play with...then to me, it's much more plausible that the future is bright.

Right now we're in limbo for the foreseeable future because In part John can't leave them to it.

Fair enough and good points, as usual, Andrew.

Everyone is forgetting what he also brings to the lockerroom.

He created a legit threat to defenses who had to respect him as he did occasionally bounce long runs. That helps any QB.  Now we have none of that.

No surprise in what he did there.  He can no longer be the total focal point of a defense.  They started to key him when Hurts was struggling early and then AJ Brown took over for a while.  Philly has a bunch of weapons on offense and still very good OL (although there were some struggles with Kelce gone from center).  I don't think 2K total yards is out of the question for him this year.

Barkley had health issues with the Giants but there was a much bigger burden on him in every game.  From guys hitting him in the backfield to no threat of the pass.  I know some of those injuries had nothing to do with workload, but getting hit in the backfield by a 320 lb. DT is a little different than not getting touched until the 2nd or 3rd level.  Actually think that may help his health throughout the season...Plus he no longer has Ronnie Barnes.

I cannot root for Philly, but Saquon is on my fantasy team.  So I hope he can have a great year and they still somehow miss the playoffs.

What did the Giants RBs have for YPC yesterday?  I know a WR had the longest run, but I think other that it was 3 YPC.

I'll say this- the fact he did what he did on that trash field in Brazil makes me wonder what his cuts and agility will look like back on an NFL track.  I hope nothing but the best for the guy (except against us, but let's just come to grips with it- he is going to torch the hell out of us), he deserves it after having to be a part of this sorry franchise for so long.

The way Norm Chow utilized Reggie Bush at USC I would have found a way to the same with Saquon so he touched the ball 15-20 times per game, some as RB inside and outside but also as a wingback to run wheel routes and split wide to catch downfield passes but also come in motion toward line and catch and run.

Giants looked prehistoric with him.

kartanoman

I wish him only the best and hope he finds his way to achieve career numbers. Sad that, aside from his rookie season, we were never able to witness his full potential otherwise. I couldn't care less who he plays for. He deserves an opportunity to be at his best for a contender, even if it is a hated rival.

Watching old Gale Sayers' films, I feel precisely the same way about him and how injuries and primitive surgical techniques robbed him of his gifts.

Time will tell whether Barkley holds up over the course of a full season in Filthy-delphia. But at least the offense will be balanced to where he shouldn't be worn down by mid-season as he was with this team.

I can only wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

Peace!
