Depends on how well the line protects him.

Quote from: kingm56 on September 17, 2024, 12:47:49 PMI still don't see any correlation with the 2007 Giants; again, that defense was individually talented. This team is voided of individual talent; I think you I and fundamentally disagree on how much coaching matters.  To me, it's not a surprise the same players who produced less than stellar results under Wink, are also performing poorly under a different coordinator.  Will they improve?  Sure, but so will the offenses we play.  We're going to start playing pro bowl QBs soon.
There are many adjustments that could have been made in coverage or improving execution. It's not primarily on talent. It's when the Mike Backer should drop back in a Tampa 2, the distance the Cover 2 Players are deep so the soft zone is minimized, how the Corner in Man Coverage were shaded, and knowing responsibilities. I'm not saying they will, but after 2 games, I give them some slack in a new system.  And you now claim they are the same players but not all are or started and played. I'll spare you the head-to-head list and snap counts. You can do that on your own. Seems like you're arguing just to argue.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

Who are these "Redskins" you speak of?  :-??

I will confess that I am old enough that I didn't pick up on the wrong/old name until like the third time I saw it.
SMART, TOUGH, DEPENDABLE

Are you comparing Spagnola to Bowens? REALLY.

The 2007 Giants had a great defense and just needed a few games to realize that, what we have now are a bunch of guys, some who are very overpaid and playing like fat cats, and those who should be bagging groceries at Stop and Shop.

There is no comparison except both those teams started out 0-2.

As that famous Big Tuna once said you are what your record says you are and just because we are not giving up loads of points, means diddly at the end of the day. If we can't get to the passer, teams who can score will put up numbers on us.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

I'm not arguing to argue; I fundamentally disagree with you and see no correlation with the 07 Giants.  I don't think we're going to get tangibly better with time. I just don't see a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball, especially relative to our division opponents. I think we're a middle-of-the-pack defense and will finish between 14 - 20 this season.

We're we agree is I'm also not killing the coaches, nor am I calling for them to be fired. I don't expect coaching to translate marginal talent to a superior squad.  We need some help in the back 7 and interior line to get better;  Hopefully, the rookies will emerge to help.

Quote from: kingm56 on September 17, 2024, 12:54:39 PMI don't understand this comparison. Rodgers will be 41 this season...his last good year occurred in 2021. At this age, Brees was completely shot.  Rodgers isn't remotely the same player at 40 as he was at 35. I think his production is a byproduct of his vastly diminished abilities.  At 36, Cousins is probably a better example; he didn't look rusty last night against a very good Eagles team, playing at home.

The point is that when a player has a long injury layoff it may take a little while to knock off the rust.  I don't think the point is hard to understand.  I wasn't comparing the players, I was comparing the circumstances.

I'm confused.  I can't tell if some of you are arguing that Bowen is no Spags or that the current personnel is nowhere near as good as '07's.  If the latter, I seem to recall a decrease in Spag's defense when he had weak personnel.

That's been my point for a decade.  Coaches don't magically make subpar talent into something they're not.  Just ask Spags, Tom C, Lil Bill, Sean Payton, etc. I think fans had unrealistic expectations for the Def; they're too young and lack significant talent in the back 7 to be a top 10 defense.
