a quick turnaround game against the Cowboys on Thursday night

0-4 could put the coach and possibly the GM in the hotseat

There could be yet another rebooting of this franchise

Of course you can count on the Giants winning meaningless games after being out of the playoff hunt to ensure they don't have a chance at getting their franchise QB

Except that there will be no in-season HC/GM changes, yours is or soon will be a widely shared view, Rich. An all too likely 0-4 start (worse than last year's 1-3) should heat the seat for a 4th HC in 7 years. But not for Schoen nor is it a shame as he's no Gettleman.

Cheers!

It's time for Daboll to get a win against a team we aren't expecting to beat. Simple as that.

Anything less than a win today and I hope they call for his job

Great OP.

When you sum it up like this, you're right that it's an incredibly high stakes 5 days.

Imagine the difference between 0-4 versus winning today and then turning around four days later and taking it right to the hated Cowboys in front of the nation in prime time.

Just a world of difference there.

This year I'd rather face Dallas than the Saints this week.

Step 1 accomplished.  And a pretty good game for Jones.

Quote from: Philosophers on September 22, 2024, 10:56:54 AMSolid?  No way.  His drafts have been meh.  Thibs/Neal looking questionable at best?  Deonte Banks is far from killing anyone it.  WanDale who was the 2nd round story.  He's ok but there were others who seem to be having better NFL careers. Dont even get me started on all his mid-late rounders.  No 5th round Dave Meggett type success picks.

Nabers/Nubin/Phillips are showing good early round promise but it is early to judge either way.  Even if successful, he's missed too much IMHO.

In any sane franchise the power structure should go from owner, to GM, to senior player personnel director to director of player personnel. With the NY Giants instead of being subordinates the senior player personnel and director of player personnel are above the general manager in authority.

There's a reason why the front office has been a hot mess since 2011 regardless of the GM. When we draft Neal seventh overall is it because Schoen felt he was better than Cross or was it because he was told by Mara and McDonell that he's the best choice. It reminds me of the Soviet era when the political commissar had more power than the generals who out ranked them. He's been solid because despite all his handicaps he's done a better job with the draft and free agency than either Reese and Gettleman.

The starters barely play in preseason and we've been shorted one of those games. Regular season game 1, to me, is preseason game 4. Games 2-4, teams have had enough live action to know, for the most part, who they're going to be for the rest of the season. Health and adjustments are the keys to a successful season.

This team is learning what they have and who they are. Obviously there is still lots of room for improvement and there will be a letdown at some point during the season. But I'm encouraged by what I've seen, mostly from the offensive line and the running game, despite Singletary's fumble.

Bowen has shown, at least this week, he can adjust and bring some pressure.

And to your point a conversation should be had about playing our starters in preseason.

Also I'd like to point out, JMS seems to be doing a very good job. There are holes for our RBs

This was a critical game. They took it, instead of going 0-3. Dictating their own destination. It was a huge game for Bowen. Not just because of the pressure but how the players played as a team. They played without hesitation or thinking. It's encouraging. The pivotal moment was the second possession for the Browns and stopping them. Down 7-0, it turned the game and the season in the right direction.

As soon as he missed that FG, I'm thinking they will be shopping again this week.

I think Dallas is reeling and they have no confidence. They're going to come to NY/NJ on Thursday cocky, thinking this will be a get-well game for them because they've been kicking our asses the better part of a decade.

The Giants RBC will run all over them and Jones needs to play mistake-free and not get rattled.

The next 5 days are huge because there is a huge difference between being 2-2 vs 1-3.  All winning the next two games after that at 1-3 gets you is back to only 0.500.  Also, being so under 0.500 so early in the season rarely reverses and more often snowballs.

If we go 1-3 after Dallas, I doubt the Giants recover.  Dabs does not have the emotional control over the locker room  to keep the buy in versus mailing it in.

Two out of three of his extra point kicks just squeaked by, he's scary. I am not confident in this guy's ability to kick when we need it the most.
