Something we talked about last week was targeting Darius Slayton more on 3rd down than Wan'Dale Robinson (independent of Malik Nabers injury

On 3rd Down:

Darius Slayton
3 catches 22 yards 5 targets
3/5 conversions

Wan'Dale Robinson
1 catch 6 yards 3 targets
0/3 conversions

I'm not thrilled with either of these guys. Go ahead and blast me, but Slayton keeps waiting for the ball to hit him in the chest and Wan'Dale is a horrible route runner - rarely makes it to the marker. I wish there was a stat on how many times a receiver gets to the marker on his route. Wan'Dale would rank poor.

The excessive drops have been concerning for both.

Throw in two critical drops by Nabers, and I would argue, but for the drops, the Giants would have a winning record.

It certainly pops out on the film.  Yesterdays is not out but up until now his comebacks and curls on 3rd down are horrible.
The apex of his route is the yardage needed and as you said he almost always short.

I agree. But drops are part of the Business, unfortunately.

And in the end, I'd rather have a drop from Nabers who is a Rookie, than Slayton who's been in the League for a couple of years now and should know how this works.

The Defender also has a say in that. He knows where the marker is and in Zone, he can draw the line of demarcation.

Ed,

I was wondering if the play design was to threaten the marker and then comeback, make the catch and make the defender miss to get the 1st down.  What you said makes more sense really.

He is credited with 3 broken tackles on 32 receptions on the year. Three players are tied for the lead with four.

I'm not buying that. It's too consistent where WanDale rarely runs past the marker

Would you rather the Defender be right on top of him or cut the route, or be open and then get the yards?

I'd rather he use his speed to get to the markers and create separation that way. It is literally too much where the man is "just" shy. So many possession recievers over the years were so much better at this than WanDale.

Not to mention the drop by Slayton on a 2-pt conversion try.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Not slowing my roll

Wan'dale's propensity for running short of the marker irks me as much as anyone, but what you're proposing is not realistic.

You use speed to create separation on routes of 10+ yards. Most of what we're talking about with Wan'dale are in the 5-8 yard variety. Speed is not going to help you as much in such a short distance. This is where technique and coaching need to help him improve.

A better technique will get him making moves / adjustments / cuts at the appropriate moment in his route depth. Coaches need to teach him that different routes require movement at different times based on the type of route and that he needs to be visualizing the depths of his movements when he lines up on key 3rd downs.

This is all football IQ stuff. For some, it comes naturally. Others need to be taught.

That's what I was trying to say. I guess I shouldn't use the word speed. In any event so many others have been able to get to the markers - WanDale just can't and that is a huge issue
