Quote from: LennG on October 28, 2024, 11:08:06 AMReeves knew Brown sucked and was all over the place looking for anyone who could place, including the infamous Tommy Maddox experiment. Reeves had no choice as at that time Brown was his only option. That was one of the main reasons Reeves got canned, he hated to start Brown and would have tried to start his grandfather if he could. Young hired
Fassell with the caveat that Brown be his starter and that happened. What happened after that who really knows? Brown got hurt and Kannel came in and took us to the playoffs and Fassell became COTY.
I still remember one unnamed OL saying they played their hearts out for Kannel and they simply disliked Brown. There were rumors that they never blocked hard for Brown leading to him getting hurt.
But Fassell was hired under the condition Brown was his starter from day one.
I believe you are thinking about what Lomas Brown said about Scott Mitchell when he was with the Lions.  Turned into a big to-do as Mitchell called him out on it.

From what I remembered about Dave Brown is that he tended to shoot his mouth off at defenders and there was one game in 96 when he was jawing with a few Cowboy defenders that were clowning on him after a bad play and no one on the Giants game to his defense. Whether the rest of the offense liked him, disliked him, thought he should have benched, there is no way you don't defend him in that situation and the media called out the offensive line. Sure enough the next time a defender tried to push him around Scott Gragg knocked his ass to the ground.

Go back to 1995 and the rematch in Texas Stadium where the Giants, and especially Brown, wanted revenge for that 0-35 public horse-whipping ordeal on opening Monday Night. Brown was so pumped up for that game that he took off running on a play and mowed down Mr. Prime Time himself! It was a game they had for the taking if they could close the deal in the final quarter. They had the chances but the results were no different than what we are seeing today. They'd get stopped by their own miscues and mistakes and the Cowboys ultimately made them pay dearly for it. The Pokes took the contest on a walk-off game-winning FG and the Giants walked off with another proverbial "moral victory."

Let's set the record straight. In 1995, Brown got benched against Philadelphia for Tommy Maddox. But that Tommy "I don't eat chicken cutlets" was worse than bad. It was arguably the worst quarterback performance in Giants history. It was so bad that Maddox was benched for Brown. That one, more than any other, likely caused the schism which was the beginning of the end of Dan Reeves in New York.

But any issues between Brown, Reeves and George Young were only one of the fires in the kitchen. The other, of course, was the drafting of Tyrone Wheatley over Rashan Salaam, who was Dan Reeves' preference. That supposedly led to issues which kept the rookie on the sideline.

There were plenty of crazy things going on during the mid 90s which prevented any hope of success from manifesting in Giantland. Having a lame duck head coach in 1996 only added fuel to that fire. At that point, if you are talking about firing people, you start with George Young and work your way down to Reeves and keep going. A complete reset was in order and it did help even though Fassel and his men didn't make it to the top; they certainly got close!

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

Wheatley had a better career than Salaam who smoked and toked his way out of the NFL. Remember he was the lead tailback on the 97 team that won the division with Tiki as a rookie filing in on passing plays and Charles Way getting more yards from the FB position than anyone expected.

I remember that game in D*ll*s in 95.  Deion said in an interview, "We should not need a last second field goal to beat the New York Giants."
