Local ratings down significantly in NFL's biggest markets

QuoteThe same goes for the New York Football Giants, who have seen their local ratings down 33 percent.

The last time the NFL did a Mara intervention, the Giants hired George Young and had years of success and two Super Bowl trophies.  Is it time for another?  The NFL needs to have good teams in their biggest markets (and the Jets and Giants are clearly not doing it)

Like Schoen or not he just had a great draft. Why would Goodell even think of getting involved.
It's not a new GM we need it's a new QB. If Goodell can swing that I'm all for it.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Why would they? I mean, there are plenty of people here that cite Hard Knocks as evidence that Mara is not a meddler and doesn't interfere. So if that's true, why would the NFL get involved if Mara isn't part of the problem?

What are you quoting? Where is the link to this piece about ratings?

Even if Mara isn't a meddler, he still runs the organization like a mom-and-pop shop, while the majority of franchises run them like the multi-billion dollar businesses they are (see Ronnie Barnes as exhibit A).  Mara has struggled for a long time in terms of hiring GMs and coaches.  It could be argued he has yet to hire a quality GM (some might argue Reese, but I wouldn't) and since Coughlin (hired by his father) he hasn't hired a franchise HC.

Meddle or don't meddle doesn't matter if you don't hire the right people and you don't run a team with a culture of accountability.

There's no evidence of that.

Personally, I don't see it as something the NFL has grounds to get involved.

NFL intervened last time as the 2 owners were feuding and destroying the franchise.

There is no feud, just incompetence.

If the NFL intervened for every incompetent owner they would be infusing themselves 2-3 teams at any given time.

You could argue that you don't think there is sufficient evidence that the Giants lack a culture of accountability.  You are incorrect to say there is no evidence though.

1)  Mike Lombardi, who has been connected inside the Giants organization for years, has repeatedly said so.  He was well connected back in the Judge/Gettleman era and he is friends with both Dabol and Martindale

2)  Under Ronnie Barnes as Senior VP of medical, the Giants have consistently been one of the top teams in terms of injuries impacting the team for over a decade.  Instead of firing him, they put him in the ring of honor

3) When you witness the PR mess that was the Wink Martindale firing, one has to wonder about the accountability within the PR department

They sort of did that with Daniel Snyder.  He's gone and now his team is thriving.

I disagree but understand and accept your position. And I'm no fan of Lombardi so what he says has no value to me.

There was a lot more going on with Snyder and it wasn't NFL-related. These two organizations couldn't be further apart when Snyder was the owner.

The commissioner can't get involved simply because a team performs poorly for a period of time. Rozelle got involved with the Giants in '79 because of a major conflict with the owners. Tim Mara tried to get Rozelle involved in several matters starting around 1975 and he refused. Other owners who were also close to the Mara's finally pushed Rozelle to get involved as the situation was an embarrassment to the league. Poor teams in NY hurting TV negotiations were just a part of why Rozelle got involved. Rozelle mediated the dispute between the owners and Suggested candidates for GM.

The Giants aren't the only team that has gone thru a long stretch of poor play. The Saints were a terrible team thru the 60's and 70's and the league didn't get involved. The Cleveland Browns were a most recent joke of an organization. I don't think the commissioner got involved with them.

The only time I remember a commissioner getting involved with the running of the team itself was the NBA commissioner banning the Cleveland team from trading draft picks when they got to the point where the league felt they wouldn't be able to field a team within a few years.

It's unusual for the NFL to get involved.  However, the NFL is a shared revenue model.  NYC is the biggest media market.  It doesn't serve the NFL's best interest to have two of the worst teams in their biggest media market

Maybe Tisch should start feuding with Mara over his futility in running the (dis)organization.  I'd love to know what he thinks of this.
