So the Giants hang on to Slayton and Ojulari. Do you approve?

Admittedly, I heard the WR market was saturated so I doubt the Giants could have gotten more than a low 6 or a 7 for him

The Giants Insider says the highest the Giants got an offer for Ojulari was a 6th rounder.  Even if that was exaggerated by the Giants to justify a lack of trade you have to think the best they could get was a  mid to low-5

Are you happy that the Giants stood pat like they did last year with Barkley and McKinney?

I'm fine with it. Ojulari and Slayton offer more to the team than the possibilities and potential of what a 6th/7th round pick would do.

I was on the fence in regards to Schoen.  His lack of anything at the deadline, as well as hanging on to Slayton and Ojulari, pushed me solidly into the "He is not good at his job" side!

Both players will be gone next year and the team is not going anywhere this year.  A bag of used footballs would have been good enough for me.  They may actually contribute to an extra win and a loss of several draft spots for nothing.  I think Schoen is in over his head!  :surrender:

Yes I liked that they held on to them.

Ojulari has expressed he loves playing for the Giants, so I hope that they can re-sign him inexpensively in the offseason, but we will have to see what he wants.

I think he's a great backup DE and contributor behind Burns and Kayvon

I think it's stupid personally.  UNLESS we think that Ojulari in particular would fetch a comp pick that's higher than they would have gotten in a trade. He I could see getting a pretty decent contract from somebody desperate for pass rush. Or they plan on bringing him back to a DL that already has Dex/Burns on mega deals and Thibs will be getting one eventually so I'm not sure they will want to do that.

So maybe they can get a 4th comp pick for him?  If they're only gonna get a 5th or 6th when he walks then this is stupid in my opinion.

EDjohnst1981

Yeah, I don't mind it this year. The late round picks aren't worth that much in terms of draft capital.

It's a little different than last year, Barkley and McKinney might have fetched a far better return.

Ah well, all water under the bridge now

I think one thing worth considering is not just the trade compensation and possible comp picks but also the cost in terms of meaningless end-of-season wins.  Last year, they kept Barkley and McKinney, which helped them win the games and put them out of contention for a franchise quarterback.

To me, what they could get in terms of draft capital wasn't worth the trade.  In terms of what it could cost this team in terms of draft position due to meaningless wins, that may be where a trade made more sense.

In my mind, Schoen may be considering the future of his friend HC Brian Daboll.  Despite Mara's soft endorsement, one would think Daboll's seat will be pretty hot if the team finishes 2-15.  It might have even driven Schoen's decision last year not to part ways with Barkley and McKinney, even though he knew that neither player was in the team's long-term plans.

That's certainly possible.  I do think Mara loved Barkley as we saw in Hard Knocks and may have ordered Schoen to not get rid of him as he was basically the only offense they had last year and losing him virtually guarantees they don't get to double digits the rest of the way.  What he doesn't seem to understand is fans are smart enough to know that suffering through the rest of a lousy season is the same whether they're losing 24-17 or they're losing 24-3.  Or 34-3.  It's all losses!  But one of those situations leads them to drafting a guy like Jayden Daniels to turn this ship around and the other leads them to watching their division rival get him instead.

I think it's possible one or both could be back next year.  Not sure how likely that is.

If they leave and the Giants get nothing in return and they had offer then it's  a mistake.

I get they wanted a certain level of pick for Ojilari, but the market wasn't there. If they could have gotten something less it would have been better than nothing if you are not going to sign him.

Winning games is not going to be considered a bad thing by the organization.

If they traded Slayton and Ojulari and won 1 game for the rest of the year, I think it's likely Daboll would be gone

If they were in position at that point to draft Cam Ward or whoever their #1 QB is I think they get a chance to work with that QB.  It wouldn't really be fair to either of them who I believe have done a mostly decent job outside of that one position.  I think Cam Ward could step in tomorrow and make the Giants competitive against most teams, particularly in their division.

I don't disagree but it will be difficult to keep a locker room together if the bottom really falls out like that.  And when the locker room is lost HCs are usually out the door.

I agree with the assertion that Mara wants to win regardless of whether the games are meaningful or not.  That old-school way of thinking has led to a decade-plus of mostly bad teams.

How many times have we heard the Giants praise a mediocre Head Coach because the team didn't quit on him despite being out of contention by Halloween?

As was mentioned, sometimes it takes short-term pain for long-term gains.

Mara and Tisch are putting a product out where, most years, they are out of playoff contention by Halloween or Thanksgiving.  As a fan, one wants to be competing for a playoff spot.  If they make the playoffs, you want to see them compete for a Super Bowl birth and possible victory.  Having more than half the team's games be meaningless due to the team not being realistically making the playoffs is terrible.  I appreciate that by the nature of a competitive league, one needs to expect some bad seasons.  Those bad seasons are supposed to be rewarded with good seasons and hope.

Then again, considering how many picks Schoen has whiffed on, maybe more draft capital is a bit of fool's gold.

That's what every player says, including S. Barkly and McKinley; in the end, they'll go to whoever offers the most guaranteed money.

I can't fault the Giants too much, as they're was a team willing to pay a mid-round draft pick for either player, which tells you how the rest of the league values their abilities.

True, but I think Saquon genuinely loved playing for the Giants.

The sentimental part of me wished they had re-signed him, if anything to keep him out of the hands of the eagles.

However, I cannot complain about Tracy as he's been a pleasant surprise
