So the Giants hang on to Slayton and Ojulari. Do you approve?

Ojulari's injuries will probably be his biggest limiter in FA, but he has also never had more than 8 sacks in a year.  He has played about 75% of possible games since being drafted.  I think one of the few things we can all agree on in this forum is that he has a natural pass rushing talent. That alone will draw interest.

Barkley said he loved playing for the Giants. Ojulari will do the same, go for the money.

Quote from: Gmo11 on November 06, 2024, 08:19:33 AMI think it's stupid personally.  UNLESS we think that Ojulari in particular would fetch a comp pick that's higher than they would have gotten in a trade. He I could see getting a pretty decent contract from somebody desperate for pass rush. Or they plan on bringing him back to a DL that already has Dex/Burns on mega deals and Thibs will be getting one eventually so I'm not sure they will want to do that.

So maybe they can get a 4th comp pick for him?  If they're only gonna get a 5th or 6th when he walks then this is stupid in my opinion.
Not a shot at you, but every year people on here are talking about comp picks and the strategy to get them and it never happens the way people on here expect.

Making no trades could also mean the GM feels he needs to win some this year to keep his job.

A natural (as you pointed out, injury-prone) pass rusher who is a liability in the run game.

With this being Ojulari's contract year, the odds are better that he will stay healthier than in the past.  I say that because, in the past, Carl Banks has hinted that Ojulari's missing time could be due to a lack of toughness.

To add to your fine points, he's not the starter Kayvon is. So as a situational pass rusher it's keeping him healthier though the year.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 06, 2024, 07:49:19 AMAdmittedly, I heard the WR market was saturated so I doubt the Giants could have gotten more than a low 6 or a 7 for him

The Giants Insider says the highest the Giants got an offer for Ojulari was a 6th rounder.  Even if that was exaggerated by the Giants to justify a lack of trade you have to think the best they could get was a  mid to low-5

Are you happy that the Giants stood pat like they did last year with Barkley and McKinney?

Absolutely fine with it. Much maligned Slayton is actually a solid no.2 WR - tall, 4.3 speed, and has gotten rid of the dropsies. Ojulari was a steal on draft day, and you can never have enough pass rushers

The Giants' problems go far beyond those two. And getting extra 6th or 5th round picks for proven (and young) veteran players makes no sense unless we get picks at the front of the draft, not the back end. We're not going to replace an Ojulari or Slayton with a 6th or 7th, and they can't be packaged to move up in the front of the draft

Keep young talent, trade old talent when building for the future
The fact that Keith Richards has outlived Richard Simmons, sure makes me question this whole, "healthy eating and exercise" thing

I hear you on the compensation.  Do you think both Slayton and Ojulari will be back on the Giants next year?

I know you're not talking to me, but Slayton possibly but no chance on Ojulari.

I don't mind Slayton, but I'm not sure he has gotten rid of the dropsies.

He's tied for 8th most drops this season: https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/advanced-stats-wr.php

Anyone is fine to answer.  I doubt Ojulari is back.  If I were Slayton, I would run to the door and take whatever I could get to be on a team with a QB that has proven to be a good deep thrower.

The Giants may well want Slayton back.  But my question is will Slayton want to come back?  He's a smart guy and he sees that the Giants are likely a year or two away from a significant uptick in QB play.  And QB play affects a WR's production, and therefore his value, and therefore his pay.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 06, 2024, 08:25:11 AMI think one thing worth considering is not just the trade compensation and possible comp picks but also the cost in terms of meaningless end-of-season wins.  Last year, they kept Barkley and McKinney, which helped them win the games and put them out of contention for a franchise quarterback.

To me, what they could get in terms of draft capital wasn't worth the trade.  In terms of what it could cost this team in terms of draft position due to meaningless wins, that may be where a trade made more sense.

This is how I felt last year.  Trade Barkley, draft higher, hell maybe he would sign back here if we had Daniels and made the right offer.  I think on some level Mara knows what's best but just can't bring himself to fire (or not hire) family or let go of players he likes.

I'm good with today.  I like both players and can see as part of the solution one day.  If they leave I doubt it cost us a high pick anyhow.
