Why hasn't a single NFL team tried to sign Devito off the practice squad?  There is a demand for quality backup QBs.

No clue. But the man won 3 games for us and showed moxy and excitement. Daboll said numerous times last year "Devito is doing a nice job running the offense"...and he WON games!

The inordinate focus on this one play and the debate as to how to precisely apportion blame for its failure obscures the fact that Jones was simply brutal for just about the entire game today. He had way too many throws that were easy throws to make but were badly off target. He also had two miserable turnovers that were both his fault and both in important situations.

This was also as easy a D as you're going to get to face in this league. That contextual point should not be overlooked either.

Jones was awful today and was painful to watch. I think he could have done better on the flea-flicker, but even if one wants to completely absolve him for not getting the ball out quicker on that play, that doesn't change the fact that he was, without question, the biggest single reason that they lost to what had, prior to today at least, been considered the worst team in football. Thanks to today's performance, that distinction now most likely belongs to us.

@H-Town G-Fan - As it relates to DJ, the focus on one game, one play, one season, at the expense of the aggregate has been going on for four years.

This is a thread about management.  If DJ was so bad, why not start Lock in the second half?  What about the Giants' defense being unable to stop a terrible Panthers offense that suffered 2 injured key players?

Isn't it clear as day to anyone who believes Jones is still a franchise QB, that his best spot would be on a good team as a backup?

He would provide great value in that role.

1) lock is also just as bad
2) Daboll wants to rub this in Mara's face so there can be no argument in the offseason about the direction this team NEEDS to go in.

Those are the only reasons I can come up with for why Jones hasn't been benched yet.  Especially given the injury clause in that contract.

Lock may be worse? If you're implying that Daboll keeping Jones in indicates he was playing well, I'd say there's a whole universe of reasons he could have made that decision. Using Jones remaining in the game as evidence of a single potentiality is unwarranted. Beyond that, my opinion was based off my eyes. If you think Jones was playing well, go ahead and say so.

You mean by holding him accountable?

If Lock is worse than what we saw from DJ today, what does that say about the Giants team building?

2) That doesn't sound like a good way to keep one's job

Amazing way to not answer questions when you so regularly posit them in place of an actual stated opinion.

How's your thread about the Giants finally finding their franchise QB faring? I would do some emojis in that thread but I can't seem to find it...

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 10, 2024, 02:14:01 PMThe Giants have some serious needs

1)  franchise QB

2)  3-tech DT

3)  rotational edge or spend capital on Ojulari

4) The major issue with Thomas being injury-prone at LT is that they need a quality swing OT at the very least

5)  The Giants need a number one CB and likely a number 2 CB

6)  The Giants need a rotational DT

7)  The Giants need a backup QB

8) Van Roten was a one year deal and he is old so they need a starting RG as well

That is more needs than the team has draft capital and cap space to fill.  I do not see a realistic reason to believe 2025 will be a major improvement.

And in that list you provided, not one mention of a coaching replacement. Yet you want to fire him despite the laundry list of needs that are not of his doing.

I don't get it. I mean I do... but I don't.

I can unequivocally guarantee Lock is worse. Not even close. Whoever decided to give that guy $$ instead of Tyrod Taylor should literally be fired today.

I have no idea why he didn't pull DJ, but we have seen this with Daboll before. He frequently leaves him in all game during wretched performances like this one. Lock is awful, so that might be part of the reason why.

I actually don't know why he's even playing DJ to begin with, given the season is clearly over (and was before today), and playing Jones only underwrites major risk of triggering the injury clause while offering no real upside. Perhaps Mara has indicated he doesn't want Jones pulled, I don't know.

As for the D, they gave up 17 points in regulation. They weren't anything great, but if your offense can't score more than 17 points against the worst defense in the league on a neutral field, then they're the problem, not the D.

I was laughing because it was beyond silly to suggest that I remotely thought the play from DJ today was "good."

It's even sillier that you are now challenging me with the "you didn't answer the question"

Jeff,

If we are to give Daboll the benefit of the doubt, the reason he was playing DJ was he believed that DJ gave him the best chance to win.   I was almost anticipating a swap for the second half because the team needed a spark after a zero-point performance against a bad team in the first half.

I appreciate and agree with the injury clause, but as one pundit said, you agreed to the contract, so you live with the risk.   You expect your players to give their all.  In return, the players expect you to put them in the best position to win each week.   So, did keeping Jones as the starter for the second half give the team the best chance to win?
