Giants need a vet QB and not a rookie

 Very interesting article in today's Newsday by Tom Rock who says the Giants would be much better off going after a veteran QB and not a rookie.

He likens it to the Kerry Collins days when we brought in a veteran and went to the SB soon after.

What they need is both in my opinion, both a rookie, PLUS a solid vet bridge in the mold of a Tyrod Taylor, Andy Dalton, Joe Flacco etc to allow the rookie to learn and develop on the sidelines for at least part of the season.

If JJ is ready, Darnold might be available and he CAN play in the right system.

Darnold could well be that guy.  After the season he's having he's going to want a significant pay bump that Minny might not be willing to give him.  And he's going to want to start, which Minny may not be willing to commit to.  And he's a FA.  And he might feel a certain satisfaction in coming home to NY as a vindicated QB.

Lenn, the time for that was before this season. When a team needs a QB and they are picking in one of the top two spots of the draft and have their choice to develop a Franchise QB, then they must do that. There's a paywall on that Newsday link so I didn't read it but if that's what it was pushing, then no. They will however need a Veteran who can start next season if need be, and mentor the young QB. To mentor and develop, not in place of.

The team is going to need two QBs and it makes sense to draft one and sign a veteran to mentor him

For those saying Darnold for next year. couple of questions.

Assuming his play stays relatively where it has been this year and the Vikings let him go:

1) What do you expect it would cost to bring him to the Giants?
2) Are you thinking of a multi-year deal with him?  Or are you thinking of drafting someone as well?
Question 2 should go a ways toward answering question 3:

3) Do you see him as a potential franchise QB with the Giants?  Like a more long term solution. He will be 28 when camp starts next year.

C'mon! Let's stop dictating, limiting their options to satisfy our own personal conceits. What is needed is a QB who can win more often and with greater consistency than anyone this past decade plus. When, where, and how that happens is at present up to Joe Schoen and the FO even if we think we know better.

And or yeah, Kerry Collins. He got 'em to a Super Bowl game a Quarter Century ago yet he's best remembered around here at the time as the "Deer in the Headlights"

Why is Lance in this group? He has barely started in 4 years and looked awful when he played including this past Sunday.

Because Lance would be a cheap backup. We are not grabbing a guy to be the future from this group. I'd argue that Lance would be a better backup in our system than Lock currently.
