If the Giants won two weekends ago, would they still have benched Jones? Daniel Jones has certainly had his issues this season but the real story of last week lies comfortably in the shade of Daniel Jones' misery.

I think most Giants fans like what they have seen from Tyrone Tracy. I know I have. He runs very tough for a smaller back and looks a bit like Aaron Jones. Unfortunately, he lost the game for the Giants against the Panthers and likely lost any chance Jones had of retaining his job at QB. His drop on the pass in the flat that wound up being intercepted was bad enough. The fumble in overtime was a killer.

Down 17-7 Jones drove the team down for a TD Jones scored. He then drove them after a turnover only to have his pass to Tracy Jr. intercepted after it bounced off his hands. Despite that, he drove the team again for the game tying FG, only to have Tracy Jr. fumble the game away in overtime - and was the last nail in the NEW York Giants coffin for Daniel Jones. Jones had a great 4th quarter. Tracy had a terrible one. Funny how careers can end on a play or two.

I get what you're trying to say, but I doubt Jones would have lasted the year either way.   Tracy failed the Giants in one game.  How many has Jones failed them in?  Sure Jones had good 4th quarter.  I wish he had had a good 1st, 2nd and 3rd too.  One play did not end the career of Daniel Jones.  6 years of plays did.

For the record I do not think Jones is all of the Giants problems, but he is or was a 6 year Captain and his play was simply not good enough.

It is time to move on.  I wish him the best.

"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Jones has not had a completeness about him for years, one RB bumbled, but he should have not had us that needy in the first plxace...BTW, where in southern Indiana?

While those plays certainly did not help DJ, I have to think they weighed his whole body of work.  Even if they won, would that have been enough to keep starting?  No way IMHO.

if we eek out a win...he's probably still starting. it was not a good game for him, but a win is a win. the loss wasnt on him, but once again, he didnt will us to a win.

Mitch,

This is an interesting proposition.  The most likely explanation for why the Giants benched DJ is they feel they are effectively out of playoff contention and they have concern about his injury clause.   Would the team feel they were in the hunt at 3-7   The Jets fired their GM, presumably because they didn't believe 3-8 was a record that allowed them to be in contention.

I am thinking, to keep DJ on the field, the Giants needed to be at least 4-6, which meant two of those losses needed to be victories.   Of course, beyond Tracey's issues, there was the kicker mismanagement, and many critical drops, missed blocks, bad penalties, blown coverages, etc, that could have all changed the fortunes of a team that lost 6 of their games by less than one score.

I don't think there was any way that Jones would have survived the season from the time he was pulled for Lock. Jones was playing scared that game and it affected his game clearly imo. They were seven games below .500 going into that game. I don't know what discussions Daboll had with Jones going into that game but I can envision him saying that he needs a strong game to survive the season. If anything, if that game was perceived as lost by Tracy, why would they hold it against Jones? It would have served for another lame excuse. He was a dead man walking for weeks.

Appreciate the comments and I agree with all of them. I remain puzzled as to why everyone (other than Rich) still wants to talk about the mistakes made by Jones even after he was benched for performance and financial reasons, and not those mistakes made by others, Tracy Jr. being the most recent.

The Jones experiment is over. This is now a faceless franchise. Time to hold the other guys accountable, or watch this team continue to flounder.

For what it's worth, I attribute the mistakes we are witnessing to those you see when a player-friendly coach struggles with player accountability (a risk every player-friendly coach faces).   Sure players enjoy playing for Daboll, but if part of that enjoyment comes from not being held accountable and playing relatively mistake-free football (through concentration/effort and preparation) the enjoyment part isn't all that meaningful to the success of the organization.

Maybe he should have made Jones run a few extra laps.

I feel like the decision as made a few weeks ago and they were waiting for the right time.  Bye week being the easiest to make the switch.  if they had their bye week in week 8, think the switch would have happened then.  Obviously, just speculating here.

Everything about the NFL involves chance whether it involves mistake or misfortune. Although our opinions on such things are usually after-the-fact, and may amount to second-guessing, they can be interesting in just this sort of "what if" scenario as long as we understand that we rarely if ever know all the UNBIASED facts. Note the use of the term, Circus.

Tracey had a hand in losing the game but he definitely wasn't the only reason.  I also think that that was a perfect game for him to mess up and have a fire lit under his arse.  We lose a meaningless game, Jones gets benched and Tracey gets a chip on his shoulder...win  win  win!

Larry,

At the risk of being persnickety, technically, facts don't have a bias.  Opinions and beliefs can be influenced by bias, but facts, by definition, are incapable of bias. ;)

Are you suggesting this is Daboll? If so, doesn't benching Jones when he was ineffective count as accountability? What about sitting Banks earlier? Those are verifiable because we witnessed them.

How do we know he isn't holding players accountable away from the cameras and reporters?
