So let me get this straight. You all believe that benching Jones was done for the purpose of tanking the season? Is that correct?

I do not think that.  I think it's the injury clause.

Ed,

If you read my post and the conversation, I think you can appreciate that these questions are not relevant to the topic of this thread.  I clearly used the word topic of conversation, meaning regardless if the Giants management did make moves to tank, there are people in the media, social media, and even here on the forum who think the team did or may have tried to tank.

With that given, the topic of this thread is exploring the efficacy (from various perspectives) of trying to tank (usually for a QB).   I would prefer not to make this thread into yet another Daniel Jones thread or discussion about why he was benched.

It's a major topic with the Giants where? Did I miss a thread on that? The title of the thread is "Other Teams That Tanked". Did you mean that out there in the X world "fans" are lobbying for the Giants to tank the season, or is it the comments made here by a few who want the Giants to lose every game and may or may not be rooting for them to lose games?

How would they even do that since the trading deadline has passed? Sit veterans? Does anyone think that Daboll, who is paid to win games will do that?

So what's the barometer here?

Ed,

What is with the third degree?   This challenging me (which also sidetracks the discussion) for starting a thread about the efficacy of tanking seems over the top.

I'm not challenging you. I clearly stated my questions. What's the barometer here? How are they going to tank the season?

It's completely illogical; playing him gives us the best chance at a #1 pick. He's been that bad...

You believe Tommy is better, or just the change will elevate the team?

@Ed Vette.  Ed, you complain about me starting topics, if you wanted to talk about who is the best QB on the roster, why didn't you just start a new topic rather than hijacking this one about tanking?

@kingm56, what value does calling Dexter Lawerence and former GM Mike Lombardi "completely illogical" bring to a discussion about the efficacy of tanking in the NFL?

Nope...injury risk is all...once he confirmed to NOT be our QB of the future

I wrote about tanking in a general manner...

I think Daboll is now simply playing the 2nd best QB on the team...

I believe that it's inconsequential as both QBs are below average.  It's also hard to do worse than DJ, who produced a bottom 2 scoring offense in 4 of his 5 years.  We can literally only go up from here...

I think one thing about Jones was he really did have the "look" of a QB. It didn't carry over to the on field play though.

Conversely the one thing about Devito is he may not have the "look" of a QB but his emotion and in game enthusiasm do have an inspiring quality to it.

Jone has been the worst QB in the league this year in the major categories with a minimum of 7 starts. No team has a worse record than the Giants. It's pretty hard (if not a touch silly) to call benching him "tanking" when those facts are considered.

Tank or no tank, I believe we benched Jones because of the injury clause. No way they wanted him to get any sort of stupid injury, even at practice. This was a decision by management, GM, and coach, for the future of the franchise.

I also, truly believe if Daboll and crew wanted to tank they would have made Lock the starter. Devito has a better chance to win games than Lock, so tanking is still not really in question.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

I don't think it was due to tanking or because of the injury clause. Mara (who made this call, per Jones' release) would clearly consider either to not be the "Giants way".

It was because the offense was stalling under Jones, Jones hasn't thrown a TD at home since January of 2023, and the bye week was a good time to make the switch.
