We have turned into the 2-3 year coaching carousel that teams like the Raiders and Browns have been for a long time.

The Giants can go ahead and fire Daboll. They will then get turned down by their favorite 1-2 coaching candidates and settle for a 2nd or 3rd rate guy the way they had to do with Shurmur. And then in two years the same posters will be calling for that guy's head.

Secondary impacts of firing your 5th coach in 10 years that nobody is considering, Jeff.  Well done...

I think there is a good chance you are right.  Although, the other question is this - do you want any of the fired HCs back?

Quote from: kingm56 on November 24, 2024, 05:24:44 PMI think you almost have to, Matt; obviously, there's a scenario where the Giants just eat the second year. Fundamentally, I think Dabs' future will be based on information we're not privy to, which is something @T200 has discussed ad nauseam. How much influence did Mara exert on his HC and GM to retain DJ?

I don't think any of that matters if this team mails it in for the rest of the year.  It looks and sounds like the locker room is lost.  Right and wrong have no place in the conversation.

The idea of him coming back next year is hard for me to fathom at this point.  Thinking they are going to give him next year and 2026 to show improvement, is not something I can imagine.

The locker room is broken and Daboll is in over his head. It is apparent in his play calling, his teams lack of preparedness after a bye week, the lack of fundamentals displayed week after week, the poor decisions on challenge flags, trick plays, kickers active on roster for game day (can't believe I actually had to type that for an NFL coach), 4th down play calls and success rate, special teams players running to balls after it hits the ground, not playing to the whistle, horrible training camp etiquette. We can go on and on. Also maybe we watch too much tape because that seems to be the answer each week. "We have to go look at the tape and see where we can improve"...the issue is - we never do. We can't fire the players. Ultimately it's on the QB and the Coach

If they lose out and keep mailing it in, would you keep Daboll another year and draft a QB?

It's the coaching equivalent of a leap year.

I might, actually. I am just not a huge fan of firing a coach for two bad seasons with a team who has been bad for over a decade. Especially a coach who did have a good coaching season with the team, which Daboll did in 2022. It's just a bad habit to get into IMO. It's what really bad teams do. I kind of want to see Daboll with a different QB than the ones he has had to this point.

I'm not inside the building though. If he has truly blown up his relationship with the players and everyone else there, then I guess I'd probably move on.

Did anybody really believe DeVito is a better QB than DJ and the offense would be noticeably improved (except Blues Cruz)?  DJ was benched to protect the cap hit if he was injured, not because he's better and everyone in the organization, including Mara, knows that. It's a white flag move....and I don't see how you determine Daboll's future based on the games after you've waved the white flag.

Exactly.  Which of the previous fired coaches did we give up on too early? Look where they are now. I find the logic that we should keep people, despite all evidence pointing to them being very bad at their job, infuriating. They've had three years. We're as bad as we've ever been. What, exactly, have they done to deserve to stay?

Clean house. Start over with a new GM, Coach and QB!
Ain't nothing to it but to do it!
