Quote from: T200 on November 25, 2024, 12:10:46 PMMy take is different than yours but I like your inclusion of LT into the conversation. LT's gifts, in my opinion, were more physical heavy than mental. That's not to say LT was dumb as a doorknob... far from it. He was very intelligent when it came to football. His physical gifts were off the charts.

Brady, on the other hand, was not physically talented or gifted. His greatness was between his ears. Belichick helped cultivate that. They were yin and yang. Bill, being the defensive genius he is, taught Brady how to be an offensive threat by teaching how defenses work. Belichick threw the defensive kitchen sink at Brady and taught him how to beat it. Belichick was Morpheus and Brady was Neo. Once Brady had a full grasp of the concepts, he took it to the next level. He was The One.

No other coach in the past 20 years would have unlocked Brady's potential.

Tim,

Interesting perspective between mental and physical gifts.  Let me ponder that perspective before providing a retort. Initially, I think I agree with you.

This thread has taken on several lives so I'd like to give it another.

Watching Barkley last night made me really sick. For all those where who applauded his going somewhere else, still saying he was worn out, oft-injured, and all the other stuff, how come he is probably going to be the offensive player of the year? Sure the Eagles OL is light years away from our s, but Barkley looks like he is 24 years old and still runs away from defenders. Maybe it's the offense schemes they put him in, not just running him into the pile time after time. Anyway, that isn't the point I was trying to make.
What other team in the NFL continues to let its best players just walk away? Last year we had two leaders, Barkley on offense and McKinney on defense and we let them both just walk away. How many others are playing and starting for many other teams around the league? I don't see other t teams letting their best players walk away. They get creative and figure ways to sign them. Look at Dallas and how they continue to find ways to keep their best players, but the Giants can't. Starting from so many guys in the DT position, to safeties, to OLmen the list goes on. We have no one on this team as stars yet when we do get them we let them walk away. Is that how you build a franchise? I can see if you got high draft picks for trading them and guild on that but we got nothing for them. ASorry but a team devoid of talent, and when we do develop someone, we let them leave.
That stinks.

Lenn,

I think most posters predicted he would have a good/grear year in Phili.  During his tenure in NY, he was the only player DCs had to scheme against.  He routinely faced 8+ man fronts.  That's not the case in Philly, where they have two elite athletes at both WR positions and the QB.  His performance was entirely predictable; what remains to be seen is how many years can he sustain this level of performance?  Can a run centric team beat KC, DET or Buff in a meaningful game?

I agree, we all knew he would do better, but he is well on his way to being the OPOTY and he can still run away from defenders. AND how many here said he was 'old' and oft-injured to pay him that type of money? Maybe it is our training staff where he was always dinged and injured and in Philly, they have medical miracles on staff. Whatever, the point is we continue to let our best players, players that you build on and not let walk away. How many DTs have we let walk, and How many safeties have we let walk, were we a better team when we let OBJ walk away? Yes, he was a problem, but he was still the heart of our team them. It's just management or the fickleness of the fans, that seem to applaud when we let certain players walk and make excuses that it was a good move. I don't care how they could have done it, they never should have let McKinny walk away, as well as Love and the list could go on. No other team lets their 'stars' just walk away.

On Monday, Brian Daboll said that he spoke to Nabers about his candid comments.

"Leek and I talked last night," he told reporters. "We talked this morning. He's a very competitive individual. Again, you want to get the ball in his hands, and I got to do a better job of getting the ball in his hands, early. He's a smart, young guy that is very competitive. When you lose like that, it's a frustrating thing. But we've had good communication, as we always have."

You know how I feel about letting our best players walk away without a 2nd contract so I won't repeat myself. But I am not sure Dallas is the model to emulate. Sure they have resigned their QB and their all world talent in CeeDee and Micah just like Schoen did with AT and Dexy. But they left no cap space and have holes all over their roster having to cheap out at RB with Dowdle their starter by default.

The model franchise is sadly the Eagles with extended Hurts, AJ, Devonta Smith and still had cap space for Barkley.

Yes, the Dallas franchise now isn't the model, but over the years, Jerrah has always managed to sign his major players and still remain competitive.

I think you yelling at the clouds here. Didn't the San Antonio Spurs players call their coach "Pops"? Head Coaches can call the players by whatever nickname they like.

I think there are two major issues going on now - effort and skill.

I think the problems started with Hard Knocks. If I'm a player, I'm taken aback by seeing my GM and Head Coach insult Daniel Jones by openly discussing (amidst laughter) finding his replacement before the season even started. They treated Jones like a commodity with no regard for his feelings. Then they  further insult Jones by asking him to play safety on the scout team. The players respect DJ for his work ethic and professionalism. Yet this is how Schoen and Daboll treat their players?

I'm a believer in the George Young theory that the offensive line performance sets the tone for the rest of the team. Once again Daboll dropped the ball. He put a band aid on the line by bringing in all Free Agent guards and totally ignored the Draft. He also failed to provide adequate depth at both tackle spots. Thomas has an injury history and Schoen left Ezeudu as his backup? Now he's scurrying picking up Practice Squad players in mid season to play the most important position on offense besides QB?

I could go on and on with Schoen and his mistakes. But he has taken an ascending Playoff team in 2022 and has turned it into the laughing stock of the NFL. Enough said ....

Openly discussing finding his replacement is an issue why? He isn't good, never was, never will be, they need to find their long term answer at QB which is the correct thing to do. He has his guaranteed money, much more than he deserves and will be set for life. They don't owe him anything they are looking at the long term interest of the team, DJ was never that. Maybe if he gave them a reason to respect his ability on the field, they would have. He is not a good starting QB, he is a high end backup at best.

And how is it Dabolls fault for players acquired or not acquired, he doesn't sign or bring people in. Schoen also brought in an OT in Eleumenor, they didn't bring in all guards.

I admit a better swing option should have been brought in, in addition to what they did.

But player acquisition is not a Daboll decision he might have some influence but he does not call those shots, I also hope you realize that pro bowl high level players don't sit on the couch, there isn't a magic wand you can wave in late November post trade deadline to acquire some high end players

At least not in my book.
