Quote from: kingm56 on November 27, 2024, 11:27:01 AMIf he continues on his current trajectory, I suspect he'll be seeking a deal that negates the possibility of bridge-type contract.
If he finishes up with a remarkable year, his road is paved with glory. The Lions and Vikings may be the best two NFC Teams. If they go deep, he's getting big bucks.

I would rather have Mayfield. Darnold, I'm not sold on yet.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on November 27, 2024, 03:46:48 PMWow. Did Pugh lose a ton of weight? He looks totally different here. He looks way younger too.

He was pretty light last year.  I wouldn't be surprised if he lost more now that he is not playing.

I don't want to tell you 'I Told You So' but when we were discussing Jones and where he may end up, I said quite a few times, that the Vikes were his best choice if they were interested.
For many of the reasons already mentioned, but even back then, my thought process was Darnold was going to ask for a boatload of money, and they are committed to JJ, so how can they pay a back up a boatload of money. Darnold will be gone next year and Jones still has a shot at becoming a starter, at least, until the JJ era is truly underway. It is the perfect fit for him.
I wish him well there.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on November 27, 2024, 02:05:55 PMObviously, they were already sold on McCarthy when they used the 10th pick in the draft on him last spring. You don't do that for a player you're only lukewarm on. JJ also looked quite good in the preseason before he got hurt, so there is no reason to believe their opinion of him right now is any less high than it was late last March.

They did not sign Jones because they are suddenly down on McCarthy or because they have a base case of playing Jones over McCarthy for anything other than the short term. They signed Jones because they apparently liked him when he came out of Duke, and they view him as a potential upside opportunity like Darnold.

Obviously, there is a chance JJ could not be fully healthy by September, and there is always a chance he plays poorly enough that they take him out and put Jones in. But Jones was not signed with the current play of starting him over McCarthy longer term. I highly, highly doubt that's on anyone's mind in that coaching staff or front office right now.
The reality is that you really don't know that for a fact; nor do I. Regardless, highly unlikely the Vikings are going to resign Darnold. That would leave DJ battling it out with McCarthy next year. I have a hard time believing the Vikings would throw $325,000 at Jones if they didn't have him in their plans for starters next year

There were 10-12 teams interested in DJ. Most Giant fans think he stinks. But a lot of teams have the same thought process as some of his supporters- put Jones with good coaching and a decent supporting cast and you have a pretty good starting QB.

Quote from: kingm56 on November 27, 2024, 02:22:50 PMI fail to understand your logic; DJ is currently on their practice squad, and to my knowledge on a one year deal.  How does this paradigm comport with your rationale?  Nobody was willing to to give DJ anything more than a moderate deal.
You're assuming that DJ was looking for starters money and a starting role. It was suggested by many that was not his primary reason to choose a team. Instead his people floated out that DJ was looking for a "good situation " with solid coaching and a good supporting cast. That's not surprising- DJ never had any of that, especially an OL that actually pass protects.

You really don't know if someone offered him a starting job with starting money. But Jones has plenty of money so it stands to reason that was not the primary motivation in which team to select out of the 10-12 teams reportedly interested.

Fair enough that I do not know exactly what is going on in the Vikings' front office and owners' minds. That is true. I can, however, follow fact patterns and make reasonable judgments therein.

Agreed.

This is your opinion of what the nature of the QB situation there is now. You are more than entitled to your opinion, and I respect it, but I do not agree with it. My opinion is that they did not bring in Jones to directly compete with JJ for the week one starting job. If Jones starts in week one, my opinion is that it will be for a reason other than him "beating out" McCarthy in camp and the preseason in an open QB competition.

It's $375k, not $325k, but more importantly I don't think I understand your point here. Are you suggesting this is a lot of money to an NFL franchise?

Quote from: todge on November 27, 2024, 05:27:57 PMThere were 10-12 teams interested in DJ.

Ok, but their level of interest was limited. Nobody had any interest in claiming him off waivers. Nobody signed him for a lot of money or for more than just the rest of this season. Further, if your statement is true, that means about two thirds of the league had literally zero interest in him, even at the extremely low price point that he ultimately transacted on.

Quote from: todge on November 27, 2024, 05:27:57 PMMost Giant fans think he stinks.

That's for sure. So does your football team, clearly. They just demoted and cut him.

Now you're the one claiming to know what others think. How about we stick only to what we know for certain? What we know for certain is the following:

The Giants gave Jones a big contract after the 2022 season. Since then, Jones has put up extremely poor levels of production. I know your opinion is that little to none of that is his fault, and that's fine. I don't agree, but I also don't have any interest in debating that topic in this thread. It has been discussed enough here.

The bottom line is the results when we was under center for the Giants after signing the contract were extremely poor. The Giants finally decided they had enough, and demoted him. Jones than asked to be cut, and they obliged. It is probably very safe to assume that Jones' injury clause was a motivating factor in the decision to bench him, but regardless, it was obvious they had no intention of bringing him back next year. Jones then had a waiver period, and none of the other 31 teams claimed him. After that waiver period expired, there was some number of teams interested in him. However, the degree of interest was very limited, as Jones is being paid a pittance by NFL standards, and his new team is not committed to him beyond this season. They could have given him a contract that ran through next year or future years, but didn't. They could have paid him more, but didn't. If anyone really thought so highly of him, they could have claimed him. Or another team could have made a much bigger offer, say Tyrod Taylor type money, making it difficult for Jones to turn that down. None of those things happened.

I don't see how anyone being objective can look at the above facts and conclude that the Vikings currently view Jones as their long term starter, or even that it's a dead-even open competition between him and a player they liked enough to take 10th overall in the draft just eight months ago. That simply does not make sense.

The Vikings got his foot in the door. They now have time to evaluate him and decide if they want to continue the relationship and just what DJ's role would be. Jones chose an organization that he believes benefits him and gives him an opportunity, with a good up and coming team and a solid coaching staff.

I would guess that his agent received interest. Why not, it would cost them pennies on the Cap in terms of expenditures to kick the tires in a test drive. I don't believe there is a team out there other than the Raiders who would start him this season, and more than likely get him killed in the process.

It's possible DJ eventually finds himself in a Gardner Minshew role as a hired gun bridge after a stint as a FT Backup for a year. From there he will get the opportunity to prove he can turn his career around.

DJ has many positive attributes. Great teammate, hard worker, tough as nails, good arm, has ground threat aspect to his game, and experience. I think he made a great choice with the Vikings.

Fully agreed Ed. I am sure he had other interest, and I believe he made the best possible decision given the situation he is presently in. I feel like he is thinking long game here, not short term, which is smart.

I wish him good health and a prosperous happy life.

I don't wish him a career revival in the NFL. We're enough of a joke around the sports world. I'd prefer to throw this book away, I can't stomach reading anymore.
