Maybe the Giants shouldn't draft a QB in the 1st round

Or if there is a QB you don't love they shouldn't draft him?

Peyton Manning was drafted to an awful team and they added pieces over time.

I am saying there seems to be no day one starter. If the Giants LOVE a QB and is there when they pick, then by all means get there guy.

But for me, I would trade back or wait until the 2nd round and get a player like Aller, Beck, Dart, etc and let them sit for a year. Get a vet like Jameis Winston to be our starter in 2025

Even if they draft a guy with the overall #1 they should grab a vet and not force the rookie to start right away if he is not ready.

I think that vet should be a person who would be a good mentor and his ability on the field would very much be secondary.  Not sure which guys for that bill the best.

Quote from: T200 on December 04, 2024, 07:43:28 AMI think my perspective on who is responsible for DJ's contract has been well-documented.  :ok:

But in case you missed it, Schoen DECLINED the 5th-year option for Jones. They knew from Day 1 they didn't want him. You know who did? Mr. "We Did All We Could To Ruin This Kid" did.
Schoen stated he didn't give Jones the 5th year option because they wanted to  see firsthand what Jones was all about.  Based on that statement, i would disagree they didn't want him. They just didn't know yet.

Game tapes are one thing but working directly with a player is another level

You have a good point.

I'd think they would have known what the cap situation was at the time and it should have been a no-brainer to pick up the option on a QB knowing that his price would only go up.

Personally I don't think they expected to see him lead the team to the playoffs, let alone win a playoff game, thus making it harder to dump him. I think it leads credence to my point that they didn't want him.

Think about it: if they had a losing season, they would have let Jones walk without owing him anything and they would have drafted their own guy. Picking up the 5th-year option meant they pay him an extra year when they didn't need to.

Yes, it would be better to see a player live but game tape is how teams game plan for a player. They glean more than enough information to see a player's tendencies, what they do well and not so well. There was enough tape on Jones for them to say whether they wanted him or not.

It's always Maybe Baby! And with it, the Giants- Schoen and Daboll- will have a lot of capital, as much as $50 million net after a draft set-aside of say $10 mil and thus a lot of options in adding the one(s) to try to make us GLAD.

There is a good chance that they will draft Sanders or Ward as the future QB depending on how they judge their potential and the circumstances prevailing at the time. Whether or not it is what they do, they also may choose to add a QB in Free Agency someone like Jameis Winston, or Justin Fields, or Marcus Mariota to allow time for Sanders or Ward to adjust, to learn, to become comfortable.

Only in the event that they are notably unimpressed by the QB prospects in the 2025 Draft can I imagine them rolling the dice a year later with not just the likely uncertainty about who, but also about when as they may not be picking quite so high in 2026.

Oh Yeah! Sam Darnold, the NFL's biggest surprise seems certain to be a FA next year given that J.J. McCarthy is assumed to be the Vikes Franchise future. So, does anyone imagine him playing next year for a New York team which for quite different reasons share mistake as its middle name? Je ne pense pas.

I think we can agree that whether or not they draft a QB with their first pick, they will give priority to Cornerback and the OLine on Day2 and look to add a big WR2 assuming Darius Slayton moves on. And whether in the Draft or FA, they must add a stud DT to help shore up the Run Defense and take some of the heat off Dex.

They should have something like 9 plus a comp pick but whatever the total we might expect it to include at least a top 3 in each of the first 4 Rounds-  a very high 2nd, a mid 60 in the 3rd, and close to a top 100 with their 4th.

Except that we are ready to hang the B-word on Evan Neal, Schoen has actually done rather well in the Draft and might prove even better if they move Neal to OG as the Eagles did with former 1st Round OT, Mekhi Becton.

In any case, I'm feeling better already.

Cheers!

Quote from: Ed Vette on December 04, 2024, 10:34:23 AMDid he declare that months prior to the draft? Funny but I don't seem to recall that. I'm well aware of inherent prejudice among some fans, and it's surely out there in this case, but not everyone is concerned. It doesn't help the young men's draft stock when dear old dad meddles before the pecking order is even set. He brought this upon himself, and the collateral effect upon both young men.

I don't remember when exactly the Manning family got involved, but when Archie did, all I remember is Giants fans applauding because it meant Eli would land here. If people felt the same way now about Shedeur (which i think they should), the reaction would be the same.

My hope is the Giants dont reach and get a QB in round one just to get one. I hope what comes out of this draft is:

1-A college player that was a Right Tackle most if not all his college career

2- Get a CB

3- Take a chance on a QB in the 2nd round (Allar, Dart)

4- get a guard

5-ILB

6-DT

I certainly don't want Sanders...He seems very immature and his father doesn't want him to play here..I don't want anyone that's afraid of playing in NY

Like I said if Daboll and Schoen come back there is absolutely no chance the Giants don't draft a QB. If they are canned, the new team will also most likely draft a QB.

Yeah - and what about all the high draft picks used for that Oline?... where does this factor in to the equation?

If it looks like Allar would be a 2nd round pick, he should stay at Penn State another year .

Sometimes when you need something so badly (like a QB) you dont pay enough attention to the flaws.

If the Giants force a QB pick in round 1 who becomes DJ 2.0 while All Pro after All Pro get drafted after their pick, it will set the Giants back farther.

They need a QB.  Find it elsewhere if a real talent is not there in early 1st round.  Draft Travis Hunter then try to grab Jalen Milroe later.

Would it be inappropriate for Mara to invite Sanders to his booth to watch the game today?
