A plea to John Mara to retain the staff

I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

This is what it's about for me:

QuoteIf you let Schoen and Daboll go without picking a quarterback, you'll be cheating the process Mara had no issue saying he believed in as recently as last month. Look: This isn't perfect by any stretch. It's embarrassing at times, for sure.

Schoen and Daboll have made mistakes. They came here as a first-time GM and HC duo that, by most accounts, were at the top of the market with plenty of suitors, They were in lock step about building a foundation and then sustaining success.

And then Daboll went out and squeezed every ounce of what many expected to be a four-win team in 2022, essentially wrecking Schoen's plan for that offseason when we all know they had their sights set on one of the quarterbacks.

So Schoen pivoted, and admittedly, in some ways, he regrets that decision. But he backed his coach, he backed his owner and did his job by trying to thread the needle and find a way to bring back the quarterback, Daniel Jones, and the running back, Saquon Barkley, who led that surprising run to the playoffs, including the first playoff win since Super Bowl XLVI.

As Schoen acknowledged in his bye week news conference: "You come off a winning season, some of the issues were maybe masked or you're blinded a little bit by it because of the success."

Interesting argument.   In my mind, it's a flawed argument because it focuses on why they should be fired, but not on why they are the right people moving forward.   They say in investing, it's not a bad idea to periodically review your stock holdings.   To decide to keep or sell a given stock, ask yourself if you would buy the stock now.

Applying that technique, if you owmed an NFL team, would Schoen and Daboll be the team you would hire to run your team?

I think if Schoen survives this season, it's an implicit acknowledgement that Mara was at least involved in the debacle of the Jones contract.

If he's fired. It was all on him.

What has Daboll done well? I'm still waiting for a real answer to that.

Jersey Heel

I don't see how they can possibly sell this to fans and expect any sort of enthusiasm. What, exactly, have they done that makes people think the arrow is pointing up? Look at the quarterback room they assembled. Look at the missed picks. Look at the lack of depth at any position. Most importantly, look at the results.

This. It's not fair for a GM and Coach to be hired and fired without ever selecting their own QB.  I agree Daboll squeezed everything he could out of the 2022 team and maybe, just maybe, that earns him a shot with his own guy.

However this team doesn't look prepared and Wink just left over him.  Something is wrong there.  If they fire Daboll I won't really feel like we "let a great one go" personally.  As for Schoen, he hasn't drafted poorly, there's hits there.  But the guys he let go, the Jones contract. Those are firable missteps for most organizations I should think.  As a matter of fact, what's protecting these guys is a decade of ineptitude and an owner who is just plain sick of turning over the front office.

I agree! Moreover, there is no need to plea "to retain" 'cause Mara is not going to cave to the snivelers who don't seem able to recognize that 1) Schoen/Daboll have just made the decision that until now had them trapped by Gettleman and subsequent rotten luck.

And 2) Do we really want to trust John (or any) Mara to not resume the destructive reliance on nepo-cronyism that plagued the franchise before, and some would say with brief joyful exception since, the League-impelled George Young era. That, of course, not only led to the 2 Parcells-led Super Bowls but might have then avoided the bumbling and stumbling which followed Tuna's decision to leave after 1990, had Young been able to get his first choice Tom Coughlin to then take over. Unfortuna, TC had just taken the Boston College job.

Of course, if Major Tom had become Parcells's successor, he surely wouldn't have been some 15 years later with Eli as his QB and with Gilbride calling plays. Still, chance is never not a factor even for a cronyista Mara. And so now to the point, are we really ready to let a Mara(s) give us another bite at the McAdoo, Gettleman, Joe Judge, Big Jersey Apple?

I don't know who would, but it wouldn't be me.

Cheers!

The real question I have is that if he's such a wonderful QB guy.  Why did Daniel Jones get nothing but worse?

I feel like you want something to shoot down. I answered you in another thread but it wasn't good enough.

It was a legit answer that you didn't like. That's fine but don't say you weren't given an answer.

Didn't I also comment on this to the Master Debater?
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

I think Schoen would struggle to get an assistant GM job. He's going to have to rebuild his brand after this.

Daboll is supposed to be an offensive expert, yet we are last in scoring after finishing 30th last season. He's supposed to be a QB expert, yet he just cut his #1 QB and bypassed his #2 QB. If he can't make the offense work, then he has no real value here.

A solid QB coach doesn't make him
a solid head coach.  That is if you even agree he's as great with QBs as was advertised.
