How long before the Giants turn things around and become a playoff contender?

MightyGiants

There has been a lot of discussion about what needs to be done to turn things around.  What hasn't been discussed is how long do you believe it will take to turn things around.

If you like, please explain your vote below.

Depends. If Schoen and Daboll come back and pick their QB next season, 2027 at the latest.

If there's a new coach and/or GM, after 2027.

2026 is my vote, assuming the QB selection is successful alongside a couple more solid players added in FA and draft up until then.

Contender to make the playoffs or contender to be a force in the playoffs?

No QB, major changes to the offensive line needed and TE still a question mark indicate no foundation. And that's only the Offense. New head coach or the same one with pressure to make a total turn around. This organization is very unstable. I don't see them any better than 1978. At least they had a decent defense back then.

After all the discussion here that, as long as "The Little Shop Around The Corner" management style of the Mara family reigns supreme as "The Giants Way," how can we realistically provide an honest response to this question?

If we caveat the question with, "Provided John Mara is gagged and tied to a chair, so he isn't able to break it in disgust, and the Commissioner reinstates Pete Rozelle's original declaration, which applied to Wellington and Tim, as it pertained to George Young's authority to run the Operations of the Football Giants, HOW MANY YEARS before the Giants are a playoff contender?"

My answer is three (3).

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

I would define it as a team that is expected to make the playoffs, which presumes they would likely make some noise once they are in.

Not knowing the draft or off season acquisitions, it's a guess. Right now, this team is marginally better than the 2021 team. That year the secondary was better and the interior Defensive line had two good players. This year the Oline starters were better. The Receivers one starter better. No QB vs a shell of Jones.

I would say 2026 a wildcard but 2027 legitimately better. The depth on both teams was weak.

Bob Papa had Troy Aikman on his podcast. Looking back at the 2007 team Troy said what made them stand out and the foundation of their success was they played as a team. No selfish players.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

Obviously nobody can predict this sort of thing as there are too many unknowns, but I voted for more than four years because, right now at least, I see absolutely nothing about the way this organization is run or the decisions that get made at the top that gives me a shred of confidence that things are about to change dramatically for the better. I will be happy to be pleasantly surprised if they in fact do in the next 2-3 years.

This is a silly poll. There is no way you can make a determination now. It depends what happens after the season. If Schoen and Daboll remain. Who is the QB next year. If they are not retained who takes over. Harbaugh turned the Chargers into winners overnight. Yes they had the QB but he assembled a competent staff, bypassed Nabers and took a tackle even though the receiving room has been depleted knowing receivers are not nearly as valuable as tackles. So it depends on so much. With the right moves they could be a playoff team next year. Very very doubtful if Daboll returns. Less so if Schoen returns.

I agree, this entire thinking is just silly. As I have said countless times already, I am about the biggest glass-half-empty guy probably on this board. But, I see the makings of a solid team even now. The missing piece is the QB. Get us a QB who can play that position well and I think we can be competitive next year and a playoff team in 2026.
Yes  there are several missing pieces but with some money to spend and another  positive draft, we can compete, and isn't that the goal all the time?
I have confidence in Schoen and as he learns on  the fly, he  realizes his mistakes and is moving on t o correct them.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.

They need to build through the draft. Too many holes to fill by signing free agents now that will affect the cap and who they draft down the road. Veteran free agents should only be signed to fill gaps in the roster, not build it.

I don't think it's any better

Agreed.

A tackle is a foundation piece as well as guards and centers. They play every offensive down. Every successful play requires each of them to do a very good job on almost every play, running, passing, trick...I don't care how many offensive linemen they draft, until they get it right, it ain't gonna work.

Sorry not so confident in Schoen and Daboll. They've made too many blunders in three years. But the right coach who knows what he is doing and a good QB it could happen sooner than later. Schoen might survive. Daboll is a goner this year or next. No doubt in my mind.

I just don't see how adding a new QB to the mix - especially if they're a rookie from this weaker class - will make us competitive next year.

The OL is still a mess. At a minimum, we still need 2 starters and a swing OT. We need another WR to complement Nabers, as Slayton will be gone and neither Wan'dale nor Hyatt have taken the next step. We need a #2 RB to pair with Tracy to keep from overusing him. And we need a second TE, as I'm still not sold on Theo and we have no one behind him.

On defense, we need a DE, a backup DT, a third pass rusher to replace Ojulari, a starting CB and a depth CB. Plus a new kicker.

If we were to sign / trade for a bridge QB (Darnold-esque) and Schoen was able to have 2 more strong drafts, then we have a chance to compete in 2026. Ok not confident of it being that I'm not sold on Daboll, but a competent QB and continued infusion of young talent will better position us.

If we draft a QB this year, I don't see us competing until 2027, at earliest - and maybe not until yet another QB comes in depending on who we draft.
