The New York Giants' 2025 quarterback isn't on the roster. Watching Drew Lock on Sunday made that plainly obvious, even while accounting for a valiant comeback at the end (and if you thought it was going to be Tommy DeVito, that's on you).

The team's dreary 14–11 loss to the New Orleans Saints made it eight straight. They Giants have averaged 14.6 points per game, and cut their 2019 first-round pick, Daniel Jones, during that stretch.

And the reality is the Giants have been moving on, really, for the balance of the season. Two weeks ago, pictures surfaced of Giants GM Joe Schoen, assistant GM Brandon Brown and director of player personnel Tim McDonnell visiting Colorado practice. The three were in Boulder to get an up-close look at Buffaloes QB Shedeur Sanders on their way to the team's Thanksgiving game in Dallas.

In a vacuum, it was an opportunity to see Sanders. In reality, it was part of a bigger effort.

The Giants got their high-end evaluators multiple live exposures to seven different college quarterbacks—Sanders, Miami's Cam Ward, Georgia's Carson Beck, Texas's Quinn Ewers, Ole Miss's Jaxson Dart, Alabama's Jalen Milroe and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier—headed into the week they went out to see Sanders in a practice setting. Over Thanksgiving weekend, they sent guys out again to get one last live look during the final full weekend of college games.

So what does this show? To me, it's two things. First, the Giants were under no illusion that they should bank on Jones breaking through to another level—the way he did in 2022—again, to justify picking up the $30.5 million on his contract for next season. Second, it makes it apparent that the plan has been, as John Mara has said, to stay the course with the current regime and give Schoen and Brian Daboll the chance to draft a quarterback.

Will they still? It's a fair question. There are the aforementioned eight consecutive losses, and the lack of a win at MetLife Stadium, a stadium over which some colorful commentary on the team's season flew Sunday. But there's also the fact that the Giants have, as I've mentioned a few times, pulled the plug quickly three times in the past decade, and the premise that Mara most certainly doesn't want to do it again.

Which is to say, yeah, I still think Daboll and Schoen will be back next year, with some changes on the staff. But given where the Giants are right now, it's probably best to wait before saying that with complete certainty.

I have no doubt that they should be and will be back for reasons I have made quite clear, right here as recently as an hour ago.

Cheers!

I guess if we want to be out of the playoffs before Haloween, keeping those two would give us the best chances...

If Daboll is coming back, which I think would be a mistake, I'd rather just sign Darnold and draft Hunter. I see no reason to allow a lame duck regime to draft a QB 1st or 2nd overall.

What's confusing to me is if you are looking ahead to the draft, losing these games now is a necessary evil.  They simply have to lose them.  One single win and they could end up dropping SO far.  Armed with that knowledge, how can we hold these games against anybody?

I get that going 2-15 is a fireable offense and not a person in the football watching world would think it's crazy if the Giants decided to fire one or both of them, but I do think they deserve a real chance with a real QB.

If Mara keeps them I think it's yet another indication that keeping Jones was perhaps not made mandatory, but strongly encouraged by ownership.  Moreso than Daboll/Schoen who immediately turned down the 5th year option upon arrival indicating they wanted him gone as quickly as possible. If they go 2-15 in 2022 instead of that miracle playoff run, I think this team today would be right with the Eagles fighting for the division. Or at least very close to that.  Hell they might have even kept Barkley.  That season set them back so much.

Can't wait for these last four weeks to go by to finalize the 2-15.

I don't know who they will pick to be the next QB but they WILL pick a QB. There's not a shred of doubt in my mind.

There is no doubt that Darnold would be the best QB on the Giants today but it's not instant success and we become the Vikings of 2025. Darnold joined a good team that had Cousins last year who priced himself out of their budget. This is why I say start from scratch with the best rookie we can draft like we did with Eli.

That is the paradox.   Daboll is tasked with winning games, period.   Part of what is handicapping that effort is the weak roster that Schoen has supplied him with.

As fans, it's perfectly fine for us to hope for losses, but the current regime owns those losses.

The roster had capable tools on the offensive side, except for the most important one. Yes, Schoen is a part of the reason but Mara is the biggest factor in Jones being here.

As much as Mara may not like it, he's letting Schoen run the team. That's why Jones is gone with Mara's approval. That tells me he's getting out of the way.

If the team falters with no signs of progress next season, they will be gone. And I will be OK with that.

As much as you may not like it, Mara stayed out of the way and let Schoen sign DJ to the veteran contract.  He stayed out of the way when Schoen let Barkley walk, and he stayed out of the way when they passed on drafting a QB this past draft

That's not a fact.

You and I have contrasting speculations on that contract and who was behind it. Maybe one day the truth will come out.  :-??

Yes, I agree on the others. And as long as he stays out of the way, this team will improve.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Schoen and Daboll are not blameless and they have dirt on their hands. I believe they can effectively right the ship.

Irrespective of who wanted Jones back in 2023 - what GM in their right mind would enter a complete rebuild after just making the Playoffs the year before? Jones was solid in 2022 running Daboll's offense very well. Jones' top receiver was a Practice Squad player. Signing Jones was a no brainer especially considering there were no other options.

Who suggested a complete rebuild? The only person that needed to be an ex-Giant was Jones. Who said complete rebuild?
