Quote from: T200 on December 17, 2024, 09:37:59 AMThe big difference is that Brees was coming off a shoulder injury and the Chargers weren't too sure about how he would be physically.

In Minny, it's the rookie coming off a major injury but not having any type of proven history in the league to lean on.

Gonna be interesting for them.

JJ had meniscus surgery then they cleaned it up as a follow up.  Not ligament surgery.  This is not a major injury.

Probably not but it was serious enough for him to miss the entire season.

Quote from: Philosophers on December 17, 2024, 08:28:34 AMConundrum for a team having to decide between retaining a veteran QBversus letting him go and hoping the rookie QB will step up.

It's a tough decision, for sure. And because the position is so important, I don't mind drafting a QB in the 1st as a contingency to maybe losing your franchise guy to FA.

BUT, if you're going to do that, you need to have the fortitude to then make the tough decision.

If your vet steps up and performs at a high level - and your team has a window to compete - then you can't afford to waste the draft pick's rookie contract and need to trade him to bring some value back.

I think given a do-over, the Chargers would have preferred to keep Brees and tried to get a 1st back for Rivers.

Since they may need Dline help more than an Extra QB, I would offer Thibs in exchage for JJ... throw in a late round if needed.

I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Wonder for JJ how much the injury stunts his growth. How far ahead is he next year compared to a rookie?  He has a year of the mental learning but no practice reps.

Because it's only a meniscus, I would think he's been on the sideline and certainly at practices/position group rooms listening and learning and asking questions.

McCarthy has proven nothing other than his current and future value to the Vikings will be decided more by Sam Darnold and his potential suitors than anyone or anything else.

Cheers!

McCarthy's value will be proven ny himself, not anyone else just like any player.

Yes, and that is as I said, not yet proven. But it may be determined in part before he gets to play a snap for the Vikings by how much they then value Sam Darnold at season's end. N'est pas?

Cheers!
