No package deal.  Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll came in together on five-year contracts.  This does not mean they will stay together.  A split could be the works as the response to this terrible season.

Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll fates don't have to be a Giants package deal

Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll came in together, both on five-year contracts. This does not mean they must or will go out together.

There is no doubt co-owner John Mara envisioned these two, hired in 2022, alongside each other for years to come, returning the Giants to their glory days, friends who worked together in Buffalo in assistant roles hitting a grander stage, with promotions and a bond that would be unshakeable. This vision grew even more vibrant after the debut season produced the first playoff victory in 11 years.

That vision is now quite blurry.

There is no rift between Schoen and Daboll. By all accounts, their behind-the-scenes relationship remains strong. They speak every day. There are honest conversations. There are the usual front office-coaching staff disagreements as to how the personnel is utilized, but Schoen is a believer in supporting the head coach, because the coach is the one in all the meetings and he knows the players better than the general manager knows them.

To not see this issue has me scratching my head. It should be examined by ownership.

I agree, this is a knock on Daboll I assume. When you look at how Mekhi Becton is playing for the Eagles, having a failed, highly regarded OT of your own with a similar build, why that was not tried before the injuries hit is baffling.

This is a criticism I agree with. He had talent is college, he just may have been a better fit inside in the NFL with his physical limitations or struggles.

Quote from: Doc16LT56 on December 17, 2024, 09:47:49 AMYes, the Giants would like to keep Joe Schoen (Daboll is a lost cause at this point).

But for anyone who still thinks the Giants don't try to control the beat writers, watch this video.

So Bobby, not even a credentialed member of the media, is getting threatening phone calls from the Giants organization for saying Schoen (and Daboll) should be fired.

YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY THIS TEAM SUCKS? That right there is your answer.  They want to try and change reality rather than deal with reality.

He turned the Jags into a dumpster fire and alienated the players into a near mutiny. He soiled his reputation as a front office executive. No other teams have considered bringing him into their brass in any role since he was fired.

Fair enough. I wasn't aware of this. I had thought Tom built the roster.

The first time, Tom did.  After he left the Giants, Tom rejoined the Jags as a consultant.  As @TDToomer said, Tom got himself in trouble by trying to push guys to show up to voluntary practices

Would anyone be surprised by this if it happens this way?

If Schoen brings in a new HC and a rookie QB he gets at least a couple more years in his position.

Do we know what the locker room thinks of Daboll at this point?  I have no idea.

I would bet it's tough for some players to listen to a HC in year 4 who has led them to worse records each year and then makes some moves that suggest tanking once they got to a certain point.

Giant history has shown firing the GM and or HC won't matter. I'll repeat here the jist of a post made several times previously. I've been a fan since 1965. Their record since then is 427-495 with 6 ties. That's 68 games BELOW .500. A historically losing franchise. What about the 4 SB's say ye. If it wasn't for the intervention of Pete Rozelle placing George Young in charge. There is no turnaround, no Bill Parcells, no Tom Coughlin, no SB's, a continuation of nothing. Apropos to the season think of the great film It's A Wonderful Life. GM's, coaches, players have all come and gone, the one constant is a Mara. Remember this is the organization that drafted Rocky Thompson when a player like Jack Tatum was on the board. It is my firm belief without any empirical proof that Mara is the one responsible for the signing of Daniel Jones. The two year out is the compromise. He's Gone(and nothing is going to bring him back). In the past 10 years the Giants have finished 11th in a 10 horse race. Yet the value of the team has increased from $2.1 Billion to $7.3 Billion. A 3.5X increase while producing a terrible product. Any other business would be out of business. Mara lives in a different world than we do. Catastrophic results on the field(marketplace), coupled with wild financial success. He can throw all the chairs he wants. Human nature alone, where is the incentive to change? I would love the opportunity with some or all of you to sit in a room with John and openly express these thoughts.

Given the unfavorable circumstances inherited by Schoen/Daboll as consequence of the late-stage failures of Jerry Reese and subsequent ineptitude of Mara/Gettleman in respect of both personnel and Cap management underscored and epitomized by the "Daniel Jones Trap", I feel it would be rash and indeed premature to replace Joe Schoen as GM.

Despite the disgrace which otherwise has accompanied this season, Schoen now has performed admirably well in having had a well above average 2024 Draft with at least $40 million in effective cap space heading into next season and more than twice as much in 2026. There is no way I can dismiss such accomplishment and not begin to feel more optimistic about the future.

While Schoen and Daboll may appear to have come to the Giants joined at the hip, I have no idea whether that will influence Mara's decision regarding one or the other or both. I would instead hope it would be decision left for Joe Schoen to make.

Cheers!

That part. If Mara and not Schoen, fires Daboll, it tells me it's going to be more of the same: Mara running the show and continuing to be the meddler that he's been.

Quote from: MightyGiants on December 17, 2024, 09:59:58 AMChris B. and Paul Schwartz are the two beat writers who the Giants use when they want news to "leak"

So if Paul Schwartz is floating the idea of keeping Schoen and firing Daboll, it's likely more than just baseless speculation
Rich, he's not saying they will fire Daboll. Just that they are not tied at the hip. I don't need him to tell me that. I also know that the GM will usually survive to live another day over the HC in most cases. I am quite certain that the Giants haven't made a decision yet on Daboll, but it doesn't look good for him. The fans want someone's head. Mara reacts to the fan base.

I agree with Bobby and Justin. Joe Schoen is more responsible for this mess and deserves to be fired over Daboll, but they will both go if that's the case. Apparently, they support Schoen. Otherwise, there would be no call from Hanlon. I put more credibility in what Bobby put out. That aside, the organization just gave a huge endorsement for Talkin Giants as being relevant. Good for Bobby in politely telling them, go xxxx yourselves, we do what we want here, and you can't intimidate us.

I believe that Joe Schoen will support Daboll and not be the weasel that Gettlemman and Reese were scapegoating their HC to save their Jobs. Unless of course, Schoen believes that Dabs is over his head. If he does, then I suspect he was behind the decision not to fire Dabs in season. Giving the man his dignity and showing he didn't lose the payers.
"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."
~ Coach Tom Coughlin

No defense of Schoen, but to compare one to the other is silly. Both have been beyond bad in their respective jobs. It's a reality that a GM has a longer leash than a HC but let's not say one deserves to be fired over the other. They are equally bad.

Put me in Bobby's corner about Schoen  The roster is terrible, first and foremost. Schoen has cost Giants with his stupidity..mismanagement.

Now Daboll has been saddled with him, but I think he has enough football awareness..understanding to not be thrown under the bus as the scapegoat.

I want them both gone starting wild card weekend. Period.

It is not a good look for the Giants as an organisation to be strong-arming podcasters for saying (politely and with reasoned argument) what 90% of the fans are thinking. I personally have leant on here to keeping Schoen because I know how constant leadership change breaks organisations but this petty, childish organisational behaviour suggests things are so broken that I am now edging into the fire everyone camp.
If you live your life as a pessimist you never really live your life at all.

Londonblue,

Keeping one, firing another is the legal split the baby. This is a joke of an organization that needs a desperate intervention.

Both gotta go...in my legal jargon.
