How hiring Schoen as GM made the Giants miss out on Jim Harbaugh as HC

This one really boils my blood.

For years I've been railing that the Giants should make Jim Harbaugh their head coach. Instead of hiring Shurmur. Or Joe Judge. Or Daboll. The one guy who would have turned this franchise around years ago. They didn't even interview him. Imagine where the Giants might be right now with Harbaugh as HC if they got him in 2022. One thing I can promise you, Daniel Jones wouldn't have been his QB.

But noooo, people on this board were telling me Harbaugh is "too weird" and "a jerk" and of course Mara could never have a guy like that as HC, who would tell him to leave the room as soon as he tried to meddle.

One thing to consider is that it's entirely possible that Harbaugh was approached and told the team of a preference to coach on the west coast.

He went to high school there. He spent much of his college coaching career there. If I was a trendy coach candidate who could "pick my spot," I can guarantee you the northeast wouldn't be a consideration for me.

Not saying it for sure happened with Harbaugh. But I think far too often fans ignore the human side of this sport and the fact that some people - players and coaches - have preferred geographical homes and some of the teams' (or their fans') interest in them is meaningless in light of their preference.

Well, it didn't happen with Harbaugh. That's pure speculation. Here's what was reported at the time:

The Giants never take the risky gamble. They like clean cut. They don't like controversy. It's been that way forever and a reason for many of their issues over the years.

Lots of teans that needed HCs could have or should have made a run at Harbaugh.  That said, it's entirely possible that he was happy to stay at Michigan until some legal stuff happened.  Also, the Chargers, aside from the West Coast connection, had the distinction of being a talented team that had been badly coached and had the good young QB.  He's no dummy

Well, since the Giants didn't even try to get him, the THREE times they had a chance to, I guess we'll never know!

Folks were completely misguided when JH got hired at Michigan that he could turn it around quickly (e.g. 3 years).  It was a dumpster fire thanks to RichRod and Brady Hoke.  Bunch of disparate players and coaches with zero philosophy for the overall team.  Michigan went backwards when COVID hit.  He needed to get his kind of players — guys who would bleed out ascending a hill to take it.  He needed the right coaches.  He cycled through until he had pure teachers and great communicators.  He created the foundation in 2021-22 which led to the NC in 24.

What he is doing with the Chargers is what he did at Michigan and what he could have done with the Giants.  Derwin James calls Jesse Minter the best defensive teacher and communicator he has ever had.

JH would have come to the Giants because he wanted so badly to return to the NFL.  He would have liked the Giants Super Bowl wins tradition.

JH's weirdness created bold moves which brought attention to the program and to the minds of prospects.  Satellite camps in SEC territory?  Pure brilliance.  Some of his weirdness is truly weird but he's like a mad scientist who comes up with more wins than losses.

Perfect description of Harbaugh in my humble opinion, and all the reasons why Mara would never have considered him.

And to finish, JH never wanted to also be GM or be the final decision.  Just wants to coach.

I said this multiple times.

In your opinion what was the biggest blunder the Giants did in the past 10 years? For me...one stands out the most is letting Tom Coughlin go and not having a good coach to right the sinking ship. We should have gotten Jim Harbaugh before he went to the Chargers ( runors had it he want the Giant job) Sean Payton could have been a viable option, Dennis Allen might have been solid too.

Instead we get Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge and sad to say Brian Daboll looks to belong to this group.

I really think Jim Harbaugh could have turned things around.
