Allows but not a guarantee as we learned earlier this year and the other lesson learned for 6 years is poor QB play makes the lines job much harder

When did the Giants have this good pass blocking that showed the QB was the issue?

PFF pass blocking rank by year

2019  16th  (Jones had a solid rookie season)
2020  32nd
2021  30th
2022  24th (Jones has his best season as a pro)
2023  32nd
2024  27th

There are plenty of games over a 6 year span where jones poor pocket presence, poor pre snap reads, inability to look off receivers, or process his progressions and inability to locate and/or hit the hot read created a variety of the pressure that he saw.  Furthermore, his inability to hit downfield receivers brought a certain style of defense that forced Jones over the top, as teams knew it was less than likely he could consistently do so.

Jone's games this year offered a multitude of opportunity to show development in all the facets he traditionally struggled with (see above) and he simply did not.  His biggest undoing was just that, an inability to develop in the attributes that only he is responsible for.

While overall the line was hardly good and at times downright awful, Jones did nothing to make them better and often made them look worse than they actual were.  The two were responsible for the their own poor play.

Causation vs correlation.  The biggest mistake made the past 6 years was assuming increased line play would lead to better performance from Jones. HE failed with and without pressure.

The difference between film and generalized stats.

Lets not forget Eli won a Super Bowl with the 32nd ranked Oline.

Chris,

After a QB has been beaten down by years of poor protection, you can't realistically expect a single game of adequate protection to fix all the damage.  A QB who has spent so many games running for his life needs for than a few downs of good protection to get comfortable in the pocket

It was not just a single game.

Jones had plenty of opportunity over the 6 years to show development and in 2022 he did.  Got him a contract that was his undoing and set the team back years

this year alone his tape is awful.

Low risk completions soften misplaced passes, reducing the YAC were his highlight and biggest claim to fame, earning the "dialed in" praise from coach. Build your player up in hopes his game catches up.

Yet the bigger the moment the bigger the disappointment.  This season, his 6th year he was still making rookie mistakes that had no ties, to pressure from a porous line.

Focusing on the most genialized stats and not assessing the component pieces of a performance allow for a misguided generalization.

Chris,

We are not likely to see eye to eye on this issue.  Jones was shot this season; I could see it in training camp.  He wasn't the same QB I had seen the previous 5 seasons (technically four, as Daboll played games with him in his first training camp, making him look worse).  I think it was smart for DJ to stay on the Vikings' practice squad as he needs some time off to get his head back on straight; the injuries, beatings, and lack of support over the previous 5 seasons had clearly taken a toll on him.

In any event, we can go round and round, but I doubt we will reach a consensus.

And not just 2024, one of the best statistically in franchise history when you look at advanced stats
