Quote from: kartanoman on December 30, 2024, 09:15:13 AMIn a perverse way, they may have did themselves a favor yesterday by ending any speculation regarding them and those top-two QBs. Personally, neither is worth the overall #1 pick anyway and the Giants have bigger problems to deal with.

If they stay at #4, they'll be able to actually fix some of their problems. Be it solve the left side of the offensive line, grab one of the best CB in the nation, plug the DT hole, and so forth. Those are valid holes to be filled that a #4 should give them the benefit of fixing.

You've been a Giants fan longer than most of us; however, as Parcells used to say, plenty of us here have pelts on our horses so we've been through plenty. This will eventually run its course. But the base talent simply has to improve. Hitting on the draft is an absolute must and, if they get the 2025 draft correct, they can't help themselves but improve since the talent base will be vectoring in the right direction.

My personal impression, when they showed the graphic of Kyle Rote (1951), and Tucker Frederickson (1965), as the fruits of the only times the Giants picked first in an NFL Draft, that struck something with me. For all the years I have been alive (since 1969), I've NEVER witnessed the Giants picking first overall. You know something, people can b!tch about yesterday all they want, but that is something the Giants, and their fans, should be proud of, despite the losing and dark times, they never hit rock bottom in the league. Tom Coughlin, for leveraging inspiring expressions, would refer to that as "Giant Pride."

That's how I viewed it as well, Jim and, one day, when this thing does get turned around, many will look back and see it that way as well.

Frustrations boiling over on another lost season, when you're still on the pot cooking, is understanding. This season's going to need time to cool before any lessons learned and philosophical takes can be extracted from it.

But it doesn't take away from the goodness when the good guys win.

Peace!

Who's going to play QB?  Because you can import the Eagles OL over here and if Lock is the starting QB (outside of apparently one game a season) you're going to lose a lot of football games. Until they get a real QB this season will continue to be the norm.  The roster as a whole this year wasn't even that bad when they were healthy.  The QB tanked them.  Then the cut that QB and the backups sucked until this week when the backup QB tanked them again.  Get used to this feeling of being the laughingstock of the NFL as thanks to yesterday, it's not going away any time soon.

Quote from: T200 on December 30, 2024, 09:21:43 AMI've said early in the season that they can play well and lose. They don't have to stink outright.

Winning this game is like spending $100 in scratch-off tickets and being happy I won $10. That 10 bucks doesn't negate the fact that I'm out 90 bucks. Winning that game cost much more than a feel-good moment.
I don't know, I enjoyed the game. I wish they'd go to a lottery system similar to the NHL to avoid this nonsense about tanking and playing for April. Like I've read here many times, You are what your record says you are and for this season and many of the last dozen, that stinks. I don't want to be the worst team in the league, that's embarrassing.

I'm with you, Jim. I don't want us to be the worst team in the league either. But sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can climb out of the hole.

Being the second-worst team in the league feels like misery loves company. Take the medicine regardless of how bad it tastes and get better.

I don't see Schoen reaching for a QB if they fall too far from who they want. I honestly don't know what to think of our QB situation at this point.

I don't know either (QB) but as long as John Mara has a say, it's likely to be the wrong one for the wrong reasons. Too many busts of top picks almost every year. The best one they ever picked was an unknown from an unknown college at #7.

I think Schoen knows that his tenure will be defined by his choices and not what Mara wants or likes. Schoen will get his guy regardless of what Mara thinks.

It's why now I think they need to fire him and Daboll both.  At this point they are worried about their own asses than the future of the team.  If one of those QBs had fallen into their laps and they didn't have to give up a HAUL of picks to get them.  And could have then used the rest of the draft to fill the remaining holes to put that QB in the best position to succeed then I think those guys deserved a chance to save their jobs.  But now they're going to go nuts to get a QB because without one they're going to win 3 games again next year and are going to get fired at that point.

The win cost us leverage. I'm not enamored with either of the two supposed best QB's. Now if there was an Andrew Luck type of QB coming out then all of my long hair would have been on the floor ~X( . We just need to lose next week. The team has not quit on Dabol.

Mara would be a fool to fire them. He'd just be keeping the dysfunctional merry-go-round going.

I don't think Schoen is desperate. My point was that he doesn't care what Mara thinks or who he likes. Schoen's job is to build a winner. He didn't reach for a QB last year and I don't think he will this year. There's too much short-term thinking and knee-jerk reactions. Cooler heads need to prevail and not react to emotions. Schoen and Daboll will be fine.

The chatter after this season was they should both be fired.  Planes are flying above the stadium.  The fan base is split.  If they don't get a good QB going into next season, and thanks to yesterday they probably won't, they're going to have another 3 or 4 win season.  At that point it's not going to be a split fan base.  It's going to be a mutiny.  He's going to have no choice but to fire these guys.

Say what you want about Schoen but he's not a moron.  He knows without a QB he's fired this time next year.  Unless he's just had enough of this job, he's going to move heaven and earth to get a QB that Daboll says he can win with.  He no longer is in a position to care about the Giants 3 years from now, his only concern is the Giants in 2025 in order to save his job.

I'm with you.  I don't think it's fair to them.  I think Schoen and Daboll both deserved at least a year with a real living breathing QB that can throw a forward pass.  But to me they have two choices:  Do the right thing for the Giants and get fired next year.  Or do the right thing for Schoen/Daboll and mortgage the future for 2025.  That being the case I would say move on right now.

Quote from: T200 on December 30, 2024, 08:58:51 AMIn a word, yes. We spent most of this season lamenting the DeVito wins and how it cost us a shot at Daniels or Maye. No one is reliving those moments.

Likewise, next season, no one will be rewatching this game and celebrating the awesome performance by Lock. Instead, we will once again be looking at draft prospects in October.

I'm sick of these short-term feel-good moments. We need to take the medicine (losses) and get better (#1 draft pick). That's the only way games like yesterday will be more frequent. This broken clock nonsense needs to stop.

What would the coach tell his players before the game ," Ok fellas we are going to lose this game . Malik, when the ball is thrown to you , drop it  and forget how to run your routes. Tyrone, when you get  to the line of scrimmage, just fall down , or better yet fumble . Brian, miss some tackles and forget about rushing Joe Flaco, Deonte, let Andrew Pierce get behind you and commit as many pass inteferences as you can."

Players are out there fighting for their livlihood , what do you want them to do . I bet you were very upset a few years ago when we beat Washington and lost out to draft Chase Young . We had to settle for Andrew Thomas.

Be happy that our team went out and played hard. Lest you forget , Lamar Jackson was a 32 round pick in 2018 and Patrick Mahomes was a 10th round pick in 2017. Since 2009, when Matthew Stafford was picked in the first round no QB other that Patrick Mahomes picked in the first round of the draft has ever won a Super Bowl.

Tim,

As I've articulated in other threads, I find the recent narratives suggesting that yesterday's win will "force" the Giants to trade up to acquire Ward or Sanders to be both shortsighted and unfounded. If anything, Schoen has consistently demonstrated that he is a forward-thinking strategist who prioritizes building for the future, often at the expense of short-term gains. His approach is methodical, emphasizing sustainable growth over impulsive decisions. The current data and his track record strongly indicate that he's more likely to stick to his long-term vision rather than to reach for a QB he may not like to begin with.

Moreover, it's important to consider Schoen's position and mindset. He's young and early in his career as a GM. While every decision he makes contributes to the trajectory of his tenure with the Giants, he's not going to jeopardize his reputation or risk future employment opportunities across the league by making rash or reckless moves. Schoen knows that his value as an executive is tied to his ability to build enduring success, not just reacting to public pressure or momentary circumstances. Everything about his past decisions suggests he'll avoid the kind of knee-jerk reactions being speculated about here. Instead, we can expect a measured, calculated approach that aligns with the broader organizational goals.

After last years draft class, Mara would be a fool to fire him.

I appreciate that perspective and completely agree with everything you've said about Schoen's approach through this season.  However his ass hasn't been on the line before this season.  That could alter his plan.  Remember, the Giants inexplicably making the playoffs in 2022 altered his plans too.  I think his plan was sound, and if he had more experience as a GM he might have had the gumption to stick with it even after 2022.  But because of his youth and lack of experience I worry that him knowing he's canned if they win 3 games against next year he'll do whatever the hell he has to in order to prevent that from happening which, at this point, could mean trading a thousand picks for Sanders or Ward.  When he could have simply put Nabers on IR and avoided ALL of this.

Progress for the Giants is accepting failure within..and some NFL world view reality . They are a complete embarrassment and the scribes come to us for their takes..those not afraid of losing access..but writers. And writing is about truth..and not access. If you are to that ,you're not.

if they win and everyone else near them loses.  they could fall to 10.  forget QB with high pick it is over.
