My father said some things that really hurt.

Growing up my parents didn't want me to date until I graduated college. I was very shy in high school so I didn't have a lot of friends. I wanted a girlfriend for companionship.

In my senior year I told my father I wanted a girlfriend. Big mistake. He said to me in a mocking voice "I want a girlfriend! I want a girlfriend!"

I felt humiliated and it was one of a number of occurrences that made me feel I couldn't turn to my parents for anything. So I kept my feelings to myself.

That is a sad story.  If it's any consultation, your father likely learned such behavior by being subject to it himself.

I do not mind sharing my story, but it is very complicated, and I am pretty sure that couldn't share my story in a concise manner and have it articulate what I really want to convey in my message.

If you'd like to get an idea, and would be patient with me, I would be happy to share it in piecemeal with you through PM, if you are interested.

Peace!

The silver lining is I wanted to be the best father I could be. My son had a very happy childhood. I now have a devoted son who makes a point to see us every week. When we are together he will say things like "Dad, do you want me to make you a drink?" "I'll carry that for you, Dad."

It's great to hear that you broke the cycle.  Good for you.
