Interestingly enough, he didn't roast him for deciding to keep Schoen and Daboll but rather for not firmly endorsing them once he decided to retain them.

Now I know some might say or think, "what does some jock know about running and NFL team or leadership"

Well, after DF's playing career:

Following retirement from the NFL and while serving as the NFL Players Association president, Foxworth attended Harvard Business School and earned an MBA

In 2014, Foxworth was hired as Chief Operating Officer for the National Basketball Players Association.[14][15] In 2015, he left the position and was replaced by Erica McKinley.[16] In a 2023 interview with Pablo S. Torre, Foxworth stated that he left the position in order to be closer to family

Preaching to some of us in the choir. Yet, others will support Mara saying he's the owner of the team and blah blah blah and most, if not all, of the owners have a voice in how their teams are run.

When I talk about indirect influence, these statements fall into that category. His feelings and thoughts about the team need to be run through Schoen. As long as Schoen is the GM, Mara should feel how Schoen feels. Otherwise, fire him.

Foxworth is one of the smartest guys doing that job.  He's obviously right.  Deciding to keep Schoen/Daboll is completely defensible if that's what he wants to do.  But taking out their knees while announcing they are staying is pretty stupid.  The problem is the biggest defense for keeping those guys despite the record the past two years is that Mara himself and his meddling was the problem.  Specifically when it comes to Jones.  So he's not gonna say that.  Instead what he should say is...nothing. Just leave it alone.

"The results haven't been what we want them to be but I can tell we are close and I believe these guys are the best guys to get us over the hump."  That's all the information he has to provide.  He shouldn't feel the need to tell them he thinks they're bad but didn't feel like firing anybody this offseason. Or that if they don't make the playoffs next year they're going to be fired then.  Just say these are the guys, I trust them, we're going to get this right and move on.  Even if you don't mean it!

Tim,

I agree somewhat. However, there are two issues. One part of the decision involved Joe Schoen. The other is that the Giants knew (as everyone did) that the decision would not be popular. Had Mara said nothing, he would have been rightly criticized for not being accountable for his decision.

I thought Foxworthy made an excellent point (he changed my viewpoint).  Even if you intend on only giving the pair one year, you can't make that year more difficult by not firmly endorsing them in your decision to keep them.  John probably would have been better served by giving a brief statement that he was very unhappy without the season; he still believed that Schoen and Daboll were the people to lead the team and then gave answers to questions that supported the statement.  He could have listed the reasons he made the decision he did.

Now, admittedly, even casual fans would appreciate that the two of them are on the hot seat, so there was only so much John could say to cool it down.  Still, as DF pointed out, Mara's comments only served to make the seat hotter with comments about his patience and not being happy if he is back here next year in the same situation...  Some things would have been better left unsaid.

His statement could have taken care of both of the things I highlighted. Domonique already said it: "I spoke with both Joe and Brian and they laid out their plans to get our team moving in the right direction. I support them and their plan 100% for as long as it takes. We've been in this position for almost 10 years before they arrived and it's unfair and unreasonable to expect them to fix everything in the time they've been here. They need more time and I've given it to them."

Regarding the "hot seat"... that's not controlled by the fans. That's the owner. If Mara doesn't turn up the heat, then the seat doesn't get hot. Fans can B&M as much as they want but they have no control over hiring and firing people.

I mean how can you not. What he just did was beyond stupid and just showed how lazy he is. He didn't want to deal with what he knew he really should deal with this year. He took the easy way out though it makes him look like a fool and he'll have to deal with it next year and get roasted even more.

Mara doesn't know how to do much more than make the situation worse.  Such a spineless wishy washy turd he is quite frankly.  If you make your decision fine but have the guts to support your decision.
