Quote from: EDjohnst1981 on Today at 01:02:57 PMNot sure why Schoen gets the dirt thrown on him but Brown is held out like some hidden gem (who the dysfunctional Raiders didn't want)

For people are dumping on Schoen, which is fine and can be justified, I think Brown shoild take some lumps too.

What has explicitly Brown done that he should take his lumps for?

Whats he done to deserve any praise?

If the regime are being held to account for various failings. He needs to be in the circle of accountability rather than being praised.

Or perhaps JS/Mara should get some credit for hiring someone who escapes the accountability so desired for the others.

Nice work if you can get it.

As an assistant, you really can't assign decisions (unless reported) specifically to him.

What we do know:

He attended and played college football at Fordham University as a defensive back from 2006 to 2009. While at Fordham University, Brown earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a dual concentration in entrepreneurship and communications media management in 2010. Brown then earned his Juris Doctor degree from Barry University School of Law in Orlando, Florida.

On occasions he has spoken in public, he comes off as well-informed and well-balanced.

As an executive:

New York Jets (2012)
Pro personnel intern
Boston College (2013)
Recruiting specialist
Boston College (2014)
Assistant director of player personnel
Indianapolis Colts (2015)
Scouting assistant
Indianapolis Colts (2016)
Advance scout
Philadelphia Eagles (2017–2018)
Assistant director of pro scouting
Philadelphia Eagles (2019–2020)
Director of pro scouting
Philadelphia Eagles (2021)
Director of player personnel

New York Giants (2022–present)
Assistant general manager

The part in bold meant he worked with Howie Roseman who is considered one of the best GMs in the league today.

Brown has also had multiple GM interviews, which suggests that he has a pretty good reputation in the league.

In terms of a resume, I think it would be fair to say Brown's resume is better than Schoen's (when the Giants hired him to be GM).

The only player assessment (before the fact) we have heard Brandon Brown make was on Hard Knocks, where he declared Brian Burns a young player who was still ascending.  I just posted an article about Burn, which would indicate that Brown appears to have been correct in that assessment.

Nothing there, to me at least, points to anything why he should be lauded by us or desired by anyone else.

Who is worked with is admirable but points to nothing else. Some of the best minds in football have supported various members of staff who were nothing short of awful when in the big chair.

The NFL is an unusual business.   A GM is the equivalent of a high-ranking executive for a small to mid-cap company.  They will usually have at least an MBA and work their way up the corporate ladder.  While the NFL does have a means to work their way up the ladder, they don't have an outside education component.   Education for NFL execs comes from the people and teams they worked for.

Joe Schoen was hired because he was the assistant GM to Brandon Beane.   Beane has put together a pretty successful program with the Bills.  It was that learning under Beane that gave Schoen's resume and credentials the polish.   Otherwise, there really wasn't a compelling reason to hire him (outside of his interview).

If you follow the GM interviews and hiring process over the years, you start to see a pattern where it's the people in the successful programs that get the interviews and the hires, not the struggling ones.  I wouldn't argue that their potentially some brilliant people in the struggling team's front offices and a few failures in the well-run team's offices (although I would think less so).   Still, that's pretty much how the NFL operates.

That said, I agree with @DaveBrown74, who suggests the luster of having worked for the Eagles could wear off the longer he works for the dysfunctional NY Giants.
