Interesting article.  I could find a section that truly captures the essence.  It's worth the read, in my opinion.

I think it was honorable to endorse Jones as he passed the torch. Would we expect any less from Eli? I'd welcome his ability to scout a QB.  Obviously his family has excelled in this.

From the article, the bigger asset Manning brings is his intimate knowledge of many of these players off the field.  Between the Manning passing camp and his family's close ties to SEC football (and in the case of Dart, Ole Miss) he has valuable intel

Is it though? This is purely me being cynical, but is it possible that his endorsement of Jones was his middle finger to Mara for pushing his beloved coach out the door?

Before or after they selected him?  I don't recall.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

I believe that was more about his loyalty to the Giants, and not a true assessment of DJ's abilities. Eli's will not criticize the current NY Giant QB.

I believe it was both. He talked about Cutcliffe as well.

I like your take. The other thing Eli did, in similar fashion that Phil Simms did for Dave Brown, was that both elder statesmen facilitated the transfer of responsibilities of the QB role to their understudies. In fact, Simms helped Brown, Kent Graham AND Jeff Hostetler, even though #15 was competing on even terms with him in 1991 and 1992, and both were thrown into a bad situation due to the coaching regime.

But in their respective final seasons, both Simms and Manning were helping their replacements whether it be mentoring, coaching them up or job shadowing what the expectations are for an NFL quarterback in the Big 🍎.

Both Giant greats have credible experience, both on and off the NFL field, to offer an "opinion" which a decision maker, such as a Daboll or Schoen, would be foolish not to at least listen and consider as "one input among several" in their overall evaluation process.

That would be the bottom line I would take from this article, at the end of the day.

Peace!

"Dave Jennings was one of the all-time great Giants. He was a valued member of the Giants family for more than 30 years as a player and a broadcaster, and we were thrilled to include him in our Ring of Honor. We will miss him dearly." (John Mara)

I don't mind Eli's opinions being heard and perhaps carrying some element of influence, but he is not a professional scout and never has been. That's not to say he wouldn't be a good one, but I would not just hand him the keys or make him the lead voice on this.

Since Schoen has been kept, Schoen needs to make this decision, for better or worse. He can take whatever feedback from others on board that he chooses, but he needs to make the decision and then own it. He can't get steered into another QB here. This one has to be his. Otherwise he shouldn't still be here.

Agree.  Hear other's thoughts then consider all thoughts then make hopefully the best decision.
