Why Would Any Top Free Agent Sign With The Giants?

If you were a top free agent why would you  sign with the Giants knowing that their coach is on a very short leash? Wouldn't you look at the roster and the up coming schedule and think that this coach probably won't be back next year or even possibly let go during the year?

Also if I am a defensive player , the chances of the DC returning is also very questionable . Given the choice I much rather sign with the Jets and their new regime.

Your thoughts .Thank you

They have the money to pay players and a wide open roster that they will be assured of heavy playing time.  The New York market also helps.

This isn't college. Sure, a good coach can be a benefit but there are many other more important factors that help players determine where they want to go.

Specifically speaking to the Giants, even if Daboll is fired next year, the entire roster isn't going as well.

Top FAs that are looking for their 1st pay day go to the highest bidder.  Guys that are still very good and have had a big Fa contract and are FAs again sometimes will take less to go to a contender, especially if they haven't won a ring yet.

The Giants will no doubt be paying the "my team sucks" surcharge.

Money.  The same reason they sign anywhere else.

The only guys thinking about a discount are old vets looking for a last shot at a super bowl they've never won, the Giants aren't in a spot to be signing guys like that over younger guys anyway.

It's not just discounts, if a player has multiple offers, they will usually pick the team that is more likely to win (along with teams in states with no income tax)

That's true.  Taxes would play a part for sure.  But that's also under the "money" category.  So they will have to make top offers but if they do they'll get their guy.

It comes down to compensation...it really is that simple.  Coaches and situations change...what matters is your long-term financial security.  Plus, players view the contracts monetary value as a sign of respect...what team 'respects' them more.  Only a small fraction of players care abut the points you highlighted.  Consider the top 20 FA contracts where players switched teams in the 2023 offseason.  Over 70% signed contracts with objectively bad teams:

1. Derek Carr (QB, Saints)
Terms: 4 years, $150 million
Notable Guarantees: $100 million total guarantees (reported)

2. Mike McGlinchey (OT, Broncos)
Terms: 5 years, $87.5 million
Notable Guarantees: $50 million (reported)

3. Javon Hargrave (DT, 49ers)
Terms: 4 years, $84 million
Notable Guarantees: $40 million (reported)

4. Jawaan Taylor (OT, Chiefs)
Terms: 4 years, $80 million
Notable Guarantees: $60 million (reported)

5. Jimmy Garoppolo (QB, Raiders)
Terms: 3 years, $72.75 million
Notable Guarantees: $45 million (reported)

6. Tremaine Edmunds (LB, Bears)
Terms: 4 years, $72 million
Notable Guarantees: $50 million (reported)

7. Orlando Brown Jr. (OT, Bengals)
Terms: 4 years, $64.09 million
Notable Guarantees: $31+ million (reported)

8. Jessie Bates III (S, Falcons)
Terms: 4 years, $64.02 million
Notable Guarantees: $36 million (reported)

9. Dalvin Tomlinson (DT, Browns)
Terms: 4 years, $57 million
Notable Guarantees: $27.5 million (reported)

10. Jamel Dean (CB, Buccaneers)
Terms: 4 years, $52 million
Notable Guarantees: $26 million (reported)

11. Dre'Mont Jones (DE, Seahawks)
Terms: 3 years, $51.53 million
Notable Guarantees: $30 million (reported)

12. Zach Allen (DE, Broncos)
Terms: 3 years, $45.75 million
Notable Guarantees: $32.5 million (reported)

13. Allen Lazard (WR, Jets)
Terms: 4 years, $44 million
Notable Guarantees: $22 million (reported)

14. Bobby Okereke (LB, Giants)
Terms: 4 years, $40 million
Notable Guarantees: $22 million (reported)

15. David Onyemata (DT, Falcons)
Terms: 3 years, $35 million
Notable Guarantees: $24.5 million (reported)

16. Samson Ebukam (DE, Colts)
Terms: 3 years, $27 million
Notable Guarantees: $11 million (reported)

17. JuJu Smith-Schuster (WR, Patriots)
Terms: 3 years, $25.5 million
Notable Guarantees: $16 million (reported)

18. T.J. Edwards (LB, Bears)
Terms: 3 years, $19.5 million
Notable Guarantees: $12 million+ (reported)

19. Byron Murphy (CB, Vikings)
Terms: 2 years, $17.5 million
Notable Guarantees: $12.6 million (reported)

20. Patrick Peterson (CB, Steelers)
Terms: 2 years, $14 million
Notable Guarantees: $5.8 million (reported)

Who on this list took less money, based on the concerns highlighted in this thread?

B-Dave: Some players would prefer to be based closer to home and for other family-related reasons. Bob
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

The Giants have absolutely sucked for over a decade now and have been able to sign sought-after free agents. And this isn't the first time they've had a coach and GM on the hot seat.

None of the above is any reason to be optimistic about the near term, though.

Dave, I am not sure what ," sought after free agents" the Giants have signed under Schoen. I understand that his first year he was Cap strapped. I also don't remember what sought after free agents Gettleman  signed .

I am not sure which ones they've missed out on owing to the issues you state.

Can you list them?

Woody

I am not sure why they would ....a big reason why Mara should have pulled the plug on both....and made it worse by keeping them and saying publicly that things "need to get a lot better " or whatever he said .
having said that    money talks so maybe an older FA looking for one final big pay day might be willing to give it a go with these perennial losers.
