Assuming the Giants take a top QB and I can't fathom a scenario in which they don't...I'd personally rather an old cagey vet that's content being a backup and helping to mentor the kid as he plays.  Somebody in the mold of Flacco.  I'm not sure I want a guy like Ward who already has a bit of cowboy in him to be watching Jameis toss the ball wherever whenever without a care in the world.  As a motivational speaker Jameis can pump up the boys before the game, but I wouldn't want him doing much more than that.

In an alternate universe where they don't take a top QB, I could see Daboll seeing at least some semblance of talent in Winston that he could try and work with which is a considerable improvement over every other season since he joined the Giants.  So if they don't get that QB and their jobs are on the line I could see them rolling the dice with Winston simply because he's the best of a lot of truly terrible options.

Over the years, lots of QBs are not good until they become good.  Not saying that Winston will become good but he has way more ability and personality than most including Lock and you never know when the light will turn on.

In terms of turnovers, and I dont know if this applies to Daboll, I can see him being super upset on a bad read as opposed to being very aggressive.  Either way, with the Giants, I think Winston, who obviously wants to be here, is a better choice because of his potential and attitude than alot if not all of the available free agents.

I would feel much better entering the season with Winston and Carter or Graham or Hunter or Johnson then having the Giants reach for Sanders with no defensive stud draft pick.

I think that it's worth trying to pair the vet with the potential rookie draft pick.  It would be great to pair the bridge QB's skill sets with the draft pick so that the offensive system can be optimized for both.

Winston is an almost pure pocket passer who would be an ideal pairing with Sanders.  Another possibility would be Mac Jones.

For Dart, I think someone like Mariota or Flacco would be a good pairing.  Cousins might be another option.

For Ward, perhaps someone like Justin Fields.  I could also see pairing Winston based on arm talent.

Whomever they choose in the Draft as a potential future QB1, I hope they grab Marcus Mariota as "bridge", mentor, and later QB2.

Cheers!

Hi Larry,

That's an interesting choice and I've seen you mention it here before. However, he's  not received much traction around here.

In your opinion, is there a particular set of traits that make MM more desirable than the other?

It's worth remembering that Winston has all the mobility of a Walmart shopping cart with a broken wheel.  Based on his 4.97 40 time, he literally could lose foot races with some of the offensive linemen.  Although I am not sure, the Giants have a lineman who could beat him.

Didn't you mention Flacco as a possible?

Winston has a long history of alleged suspect behavior and accusations of criminal activity including sexual assault and shoplifting, among other things. I really struggle to see Mara signing off on him. Too much smoke there.

I don't understand what people see in Winston.

I was aware of the shoplifting incident while in college.  I was not aware of the sexual assault incident in college, as well as his 2018 groping of an Uber driver incident.  I think it would be wise for NYG to steer well clear of him.

I still remember watching the video of him shoplifting.  I am pretty sure it was a package of seafood (I think it was Alaskan King Crab legs)

oh yeah crab legs lol. The days before NIL when bag men just brought duffle bags of cash and he's still stealing crab.

I don't care about what he stole in college. He's 31 and this didn't prevent 3 other teams from drafting or signing him. But I do care about his bush league move of calling a running play when his coached called a victory formation kneel down in his last game ever with the Saints. This is the character trait that bugs me. Oh and he is a turnover machine. There's nothing entertaining about a 50/50 TD/INT ratio. This isn't the 70's.
