I have been going to the same person for the past several years (CPA). I used to go because the wife is a schoolteacher and we had lots of medical bills due to fertility issues.

With the taxes changing and most if not, all tax breaks capped out or eliminated, I ask myself why keep paying my CPA so much money. She has been raising her prices every year, last time it was $400

I own a house

Pay union dues

Pay for parking for work

Not a lot of write offs, nor very complicated IMO

There are Turbo tax

Hand R Block

Free Tax USA

We are both retired and our taxes are fairly simple. When I did work, in my own business, I needed some help but now I have used Free Tax USA for the last few years and found it quite the expert.

My taxes are complicated so I use an accountant. $680.

Hello Lenn. Not retired, 55 years old, but I don't have a rental or rentals. Seems my taxes should be not that difficult. Do own a home. I heard go things about Free tax USA. I was thinking about trying them. Its free for the federal and cost for the state. For California I think its less than $30

I don't like H&R Block. They charge too much and you never know if you will get an experienced tax preparer or one fresh out of school. They won't tell you.

Also, when the IRS was mulling whether or not to offer free tax filing, H&R Block and Intuit lobbied to stop that from happening.

I use a small father daughter team to do my taxes and I'm happy with them.

Old retired guy here, use short senior form ......just retired income and interest subject to taxes. I use Free tax USA. Online very good to use from year to year because they save your personal stuff in your account with them. .   They file completed form after walking you through a very easy process.
Submitted taxes on a Monday and received small refund by Friday of same week. Also let you know when IRS recieves form

I use Turbotax.  I think it's over a hundred dollars now.  I have to use a higher-end product because of my investments, plus the state tax module is extra.

So far, that's worked for me

Like @Ed Vette our taxes a quite complicated, so I would not think about doing my own taxes.

You have nothing to lose by trying them. If you find you need more help then you move on, but overall, if nothing is complicated and you have all your forms and numbers you need to enter, then it is quite simple. AND if you do use them, they store the info so you don't have to keep entering it year after year, just the numbers change.

Thanks everyone. I found turbo tax for $70 and that includes state too. Like I before, house, 403k, and a few other things, but that's it. Looking this morning at my previous checks made, my CPA charged me $450 last year! It took her about 20 minutes too....plus 10 minutes of talking about her kids and my daughter, Lenn is right, she was updating the file she had on us previous years. I used turbo tax a very long time ago and I don't remember it being that bad. I believe it probably is more user friendly than back then. I am going to try Turbo Tax, like Lenn said "nothing to lose and next year should be easier since part of my information should be there"

It looks like you were grossly overcharged.
