You're right, he was a phenomenal actor that could go from humor to hero or villain. A couple of my favorite comedies are "Get Shorty" and "Heartbreakers"

 Both Gene and his wife died of natural causes.

As was suspected, his wife died and Gene died about a week later as he could not take care of himself.

Such a terrible situation to even think about.  Can't even imagine such an ending for both of them.
