Quote from: madbadger on March 12, 2025, 03:22:35 PMHead scratcher. You aren't going to have studs as backups but he was awful last year. I don't know why Schoen even bothered. He isn't an upgrade over our depth last year.

Pretty much exactly what I thought. Why do we even bother with these kinds of transactions? What's the point?

Guard Greg Van Roten is finalizing a deal to remain with the #Giants, per source.

Hopefully as depth because he was solid if very average this past season.

I don't mind Van Roten ..... I thought he was decent enough

The line when completely healthy actually was pretty good

Still would like a new starter , but Joe is finally getting us some depth ....

This could also just mean that we are going into camp with Van Roten vs Neal battle for RG

I hope you never run into one of these guys on the street.

Definitely needs some coaching.

Any chance this is another move to OG project?
From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

Being asked to make chicken salad out of chicken poop has been a popular metaphor over the decade when it comes to the NY Giants.  When I posted my comment, I figured someone might appreciate the clever turn of phrase.  I didn't think someone would take the light-hearted twist the metaphor literally.

The thing is, if we look back honestly to last season, before Thomas got hurt our oline was giving Jones all sorts of time to throw and there were holes for our RB. Unfortunately, because Daboll had such a "soft" camp, we didn't begin to see hard core tackling, better routes by WR, special teams play etc until the 3rd or 4th game.

BUT our Oline was ready out of the gate. This makes me excited for whatever Schoen/Dabs/Bricollo have in mind. I pray the secret weapon is moving Neal to Guard.

The problem was Andrew Thomas and his penchant for injuries.

Thomas is so good that it allowed him to be placed out on an island.   That allowed all the O-line help to be focused on supporting the RT.   So when Thomas went down, not only did you suffer a major down-grade at LT, but RT suffered because you had to reduce the support.

The interior was okay, but nothing to write home about.

To me, what was damning, was Schoen essentially said and it was reported the Giants were in on one of the top guards (Fry).  It seems like a defeat that the Giants failed to upgrade at RG and instead brought back the aging right guard they were seeking to upgrade from.

Admittedly, there is the possibility they could boost the line via the draft.  My concern there is that this is not a strong O-line class and the Giants may have less picks if they move up to draft a QB.

They need another starting RG (Van Roten is great as a backup).  They still need a quality swing tackle.

Agreed, but we can't overlook the fact our Oline was doing one helluva job early on (and nobody expected them to be half as good as they were). Perhaps it was the coaching?...if so, I'm excited for them as we move to next season.

That said, it's amazing how long it's been since we had a good Guard.

Maybe we should sign Zietler. The vets can do well

All of this was exasperated by running 11 personal 72% of the time ((60% is the league average)
