To the BBH family and those who follow our forum, may you have a happy and safe Memorial Day

Remembering those who gave their lives in defense of our nation and the families that were left with holes that could never be filled

I never heard of this before. What a great way to honor the fallen from the beach landing on D-Day

On this day, we remember the true heroes of this country. Those who made the greatest self-sacrifice of all in giving their lives for the precious freedom and liberty each of us have.

While we have come to recognize Memorial Day as the gateway into summer, or a day your local town has a parade where veterans proudly wear their Class A attire, the actual purpose for Memorial Day ties to neither.

Instead, on this day, we should take time on this day to truly honor our fallen service members. Instead of the well-intentioned "Happy Memorial Day," which fails to consider the family, friends and loved ones whose lives have been permanently impacted by the loss of an Armed Forces Service member, let us proclaim, instead, "Lest We Forget!"

I strongly encourage you all to block some time and read carefully the following which puts Memorial Day, previously referred to as "Decoration Day," into its proper focus:

Lest We Forget - The True Meaning of Memorial Day

Having been a service member over 30 years ago, I learned early and often that freedom isn't free and that, at times, it is paid by the blood shed by the sons (and in recent times, daughters) of this country. Today is THEIR day and their day EXCLUSIVELY. Do NOT honor myself, or the other veterans still alive among us. We appreciate it; however, save it for Veterans Day.

If you fly the flag, remember to fly half staff from dawn to noon, then full staff from noon on.

We are called to carry on the traditions of today, and teach and pass them on to the younger generations so that they, one day, will do the same. We do so in honor of our fallen heroes. That the glory be theirs and that a nation forever owes them a debt of gratitude.

Lest we forget!

Amen.

One of my high school buddies, who recently returned from completing a civilian service assignment in Italy, who was Regular Navy decades ago, also took part in this ceremony, and mailed me a vial of sand from the beaches at Normandy. I hold that artifact as sacred in my household and reflect on the lives lost that day which helped turn the course of the War in Europe. It is hard not to get emotional considering what our men sacrificed on D-Day to turn the tides on the Germans.

The French continue this tradition annually and it is both thoughtful and powerful in its meaning.

Lest we forget!

Thank you for sharing this!

Peace!

If you have never been to Normandy, you should make the trip. Just standing on Omaha beach and looking back at the position the Nazi's had, you can understand why the loss of Alied troops was so high.  They were sitting ducks crossing that beach. God it must have been awful to be there and witness all that death. God bless those soldiers.

"There is a greater purpose...that purpose is team. Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way, winning the right way is a very important thing to me... Championships are won by teams who love one another, who respect one another, and play for and support one another."

I don't recognize the world we live in anymore.  When I was a kid, I was constantly reminded of the sacrifices that prior generations made for this country.

Today's younger generations don't even know music that's 20 years old much less what WWI, WWII, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War, etc. are about.  They have no sense of history and what sacrifice means.  Instead, sacrifice to them is not finding a Starbucks within 4 blocks of where they are and feeling devastated by that.

Maybe we need a world war to reset all this.

We had our chance to build the world as we wanted it.....How do you think we did?  Now the younger folks are getting their chance to build theirs.  The world they are building, they will have to live in.  Not us!

The world they want to build is what they feel now and has no historical context in it.

I get on my knees and pray that God Almighty spare this world another war. For the one to come will not reset but destroy this beautiful planet we call the Earth and the one thing which distinguishes us, to the best of our knowledge today, and that is the most precious of gifts called life.

May God, as every man, woman and child sees the Omnipotent, the Alpha and Omega, help every one of His children on the Good Earth.

Amen

Been fortunate enough to take a number of European vacations but the top of my list remains our trip to Normandy.  Sainte Mere Eglise, where we met a paratrooper from the 82nd Airborne who jumped into the village as a 17 year old! Visiting Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc and the Merderet were all memorable but the one spot that is etched in my mind's eye is the American Cemetery at Omaha.  The rows of crosses and Stars of David marking the final resting places of so many young men...18,19,20 years of age, leaves you speechless. And to stand on the bluff overlooking the beach, you get the perspective of the countless German pillboxes that dotted the landscape on June 6 1944.  The only explanation I could reach as to why some survived that onslaught was it simply wasn't their time
