There are roughly 3.5 hours per week when I want them to win. And the rest of the time I understand that they are better off losing.

Quote from: zephirus on November 01, 2023, 02:27:45 PMIt's kind of disgusting that the NFL allows for this.  There are a lot of mid-season firings and benchings that make sense.  I don't think anyone here would say that firing McDaniels and the GM is "wrong".  But benching Garapolo REEKS of tanking.  I would love to see the NFL change the draft to a lottery, weighted in favor of the "bad" teams but it would ensure tanking doesn't have the same effect.

Did you see Jimmy G play last week?  You could make a strong case playing him would be more tank-alicious than benching him.  At least the kid has something to play for!

Exactly right.  And that could be the difference between getting Jalin Hyatt or some scrub WR that barely makes the roster.

Quote from: andrew_nyGiants on November 01, 2023, 12:54:09 PMDo you honestly believe that a legit NFL franchise would give up a starting caliber draft pick in return for four 6th round picks?

Including their 4th round pick to trade up?  Yes. I certainly do.  Happens almost every year.

Quote from: Bob In PA on November 01, 2023, 12:24:10 PMGm: IMO Shoen doesn't operate that way, IMO.

If a GM gets a reputation for being "easy" when the chips are down, he will get fewer and fewer decent offers.

I'm not saying they had offers for other players, but if they did, and those offers were hoping to find a "fire sale" at Giants' headquarters, the GM's making low-ball offers learned that you either make the Giants (under Schoen) a respectable offer or you walk away empty handed.

Bob

If you were the GM, and let's say the Niners offer you a 6th round pick for Adoree Jackson.  And in your opinion Jackson is worth a 5th round pick do you turn the deal down or take it?  Knowing that Jackson will not be on the roster next year and will not be bringing in a comp pick.  What would you do?  For me I would take the pick offered and not much care what other GMs think.  Because when it comes to a proper trade that's not involved in a fire sale I know I'll hold out for proper value.  In this case it was, or at least should have been, a fire sale.  In an effort to collect as many picks as possible to use next April to maneuver in the draft.

If you remember, the Giants were debating between JMS and Hyatt with the 2nd round pick.  Hoping JMS would be there but totally fine taking Hyatt if he wasn't. They take JMS and then soon thereafter realize they have a shot to move up and get Hyatt too.  They could only do that with lower round picks to use to get up to a spot and take him.  And now Hyatt is the best WR on the team, though somebody should probably tell Daboll that at some point.  So while 7th rounders and 6th rounders seem mostly useless they may not be if you package 4 of them to move up in the 4th round to get a guy that ends up starting for you.

Quote from: BluesCruz on November 01, 2023, 11:21:26 AMIm immensely unimpressed with Dabolls play book and playcalling

He will run a nice play like that misdirection to Robinson (it worked fabulously well)

then you never see an imaginative play call again all game

Daboll was a great assistant coach, and thats his ceiling

Also all the continual efforts to "Get Barkley involved" leads to the defense birddogging Barkley....this is not a Daboll thing exclusively- every HC we have had since we drafted Barkley has been guilty of the same issue

Also Barkley is fast in the open field but has trouble getting off the snap and can no longer get to the corners on time

Letting Ritchie James walk was also a huge mistake

Richie James is so amazing that the Chiefs brought in Mecole Hardman who they cut, and then got cut by the Jets, because they were so desperate for any help at WR.  I doubt they have any regrets when it comes to Richie James who likely would have been cut in training camp on even the Giants roster.

Even a less than decent offer is better than no offer.  If the guy isn't in their future plans like Jackson, Barkley, maybe McKinney whatever offer they get is better than nothing.

Quote from: uconnjack8 on October 31, 2023, 08:18:11 PMDid Schoen get the best deal of the sellers this year?

Getting a 2nd for Sweat was pretty good too but the Williams deal is probably a little better even if they do have to pay all his money.  My big issue is why was that the ONLY deal they made?

It's about time the Giants followed this playbook.  Leonard Williams alone is not enough.

Quote from: AYM on October 31, 2023, 02:47:15 PMChase Young to the Niners.

Not fair.  Somebody should have stepped in and stopped that.  Niners are already too good.

But also Washington seems to understand the assignment...why don't the Giants?  Trade. Everybody.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on October 31, 2023, 02:31:41 PMAll of that is fair and well articulated, but if Jones is indeed a lame duck in their eyes, which he absolutely should be if he literally can't operate without Barkley, then I don't see why they should forego a good opportunity to get something for Saquon if an opportunity avails itself. Do we really want to pay Barkley next year just so a QB who is on his way out has him until his replacement takes over? Seems uber short-sighted to me.

I do agree that if the head coach indeed told Barkley he isn't going anywhere, then that should be that. I just question the base premise.

They said that before the Jets game.  This is now after the Jets debacle.  Things change.  Not only that but if they came to Saquon and said hey, Ravens are interested.  You want to go play with Lamar Jackson and a functioning OL with a chance to make some noise in the playoffs for the first time in your career...or do you want to continue to suck here with us?  What do you think he's going to choose?

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 31, 2023, 02:28:05 PMSo you claim that DJ is no better than DeVito?

Better than Devito...but not really good enough to win consistently with.  At least not against any decent team.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on October 31, 2023, 01:45:15 PMI have no idea why the Bears, one of the worst teams in the league and who are multiple years away from contending, are trading away a 2nd rounder for a solid but not great player in his late 20s.

Unless I'm missing something...they pulled a Gettleman.

Quote from: Philosophers on October 31, 2023, 12:58:36 PMBy the time the 2024 draft rolls around, I believe Caleb Williams will not be the #1 pick.  Maybe 3rd QB off the board.

Year over year, I think McCarthy has developed the most.  His football IQ and processing during a play are good.  I want to watch his accuracy on long throws in tight coverage as I want to see him get more air under those throws as opposed to ropes.

I would take that bet.  I think Caleb Williams is clearly at the head of this class.  Nothing is guaranteed of course, he could be a bust just like anybody else, but from what I've seen and what others around the league are saying, he's going to be the #1 pick right or wrong.

Maybe people will lay off the kid a little bit now?  Nahhhhhh

Also seeing Josh Allen on that list knowing he should have been the pick instead of Jones that year is bit of a punch to the gut.
