Well, maybe not "must" but it seems to be a trait the Schoen and Daboll are seeking in their QB

Q: Going back to Russell, he's known a lot for the deep ball. How will that help with receivers like Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Jalin Hyatt? Wilson mentioned Hyatt as being "untapped."

Schoen: "Dabs [Brian Daboll] wants to throw it downfield, and those explosive plays are important. You don't have to go 10 or 11 plays. That helps if you get explosives on any series. We've got the weapons to do it. Slayton, Hyatt, Nabers, Wan'Dale [Robinson] in the slot, Theo [Johnson] can stretch the seam. We've got fast receivers. We've got guys that can get open vertically, get open down the field, and that's one of the things that Russ does well. I'm excited to get everybody in and start developing the offense because one of the strengths of Daboll is taking the pieces that we have and developing the offense around those guys. I think Dabs will figure out what Russ likes and what he does well and pair it with the weapons at receiver, tight end, and running back."

Downfield throwing means longer time required for OL to hold blocks and maintain a clean pocket, something they have not been able to do.  I just don't see how they don't address OL if they want to be a downfield throwing team.

Schoen: "When Andrew [Thomas] was healthy last year, I was happy with the way the offensive line was playing those first six games they were together. I thought we were able to function offensively in both phases of passing and running the football.

It's why you can't judge Daboll too harshly on offense because the Giants knew his offense when they hired him. They knew he liked to throw deep to set up the short to intermediate and we had the one Qb that refused to throw deep on the roster since Daboll has been here.

The numbers and eye test back that up. Is depth important, absolutely but the starting 5 was solid last year to start the year.

And another reason why you have to think that the original plan from Schoen/Daboll was just ride out one last year of Jones and move on and it was likely at the behest of Mara that they gave him that extension.  I don't think Daboll takes the job if he knows he's getting Jones for 3 years no matter what. At the time he was one of the hot shot coordinators and likely would have had multiple other offers.

Didnt the numbers say for 6 games we were average?  Is that our standard?  Average?  For only 6 games?  Why do people assume Thomas will play 17 games?  He has not done so and not been close to 17 games.

They ranked from 10th-16th in that time frame and that is solid. 10-16 is significantly better than what we are used to and that was with 5 guys that had never played together, which stands to reason that they would get better with reps and the new oline coach. Us drafting olinemen hasn't panned out, so just sign FAs and be done with it. Russell Wilson is more than capable of throwing deep with a top 10-16 line.

.

Agreed. The line of the first several games was more than sufficient. Wilson would be fine behind that.

I also agree with Joseph though that Thomas is not a guy you can remotely count on to stay healthy. It's a shame but that's just the reality with him.

The OL went from putrid to decent in 1 year. We had been putrid for a very long time.  That's step 1 because we had a depth problem last year especially if Thomas went down which is what happened.  .  I think in free agency, we've improved the depth. I'm assuming we draft 1 more interior lineman at a draft level which should result in another contributor.  If you're asking for an Eagles level OL, that won't happen for awhile if ever but our OL, if reasonably healthy, will not be the reason for a bad season if that happens.
