I thought the vertical route was Hyatt's bread and butter

Maybe they don't trust him to be in the right place, so they're sending him out on simpler (shorter) routes to cut down on the number of mistakes he can make by simplifying what he has to know to be in the right place at the right time. More likely, he's not winning longer routes enough (or soon enough) to make it worthwhile. In the NFL, you don't fool anyone by just running downfield really fast, and maybe what worked in college due to weaker competition simply isn't working against really good DB's. Bob
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

Bob,

I suspect the issue is his shorter routes.  Since Hyatt was drafted, I noticed he needs to chop down his feet before making a cut.   So while it may seem counterintuitive to blame his shorter routes, if Hyatt can't threaten defenders with well-run shorter routes, it's going to be harder to run the deeper vertical routes because that is what the defenders are prepared for.

If Hyatt has a bread and butter anything, we have not seen it yet after two seasons of him.

I've seen it. His rookie year there were NUMEROUS times he had beat the defender and was OPEN but Jones over threw him. This happened repeatedly. Hyatt has been given a bad rap for whatever reason. I see on social media our new QB has been propping him up. Perhaps he sees something in the young man. I hope so

The one game I watched him live, here against the Cardinals in 2023, he was getting open and made a couple of mid-to-longer range catches (2 Receptions for 89 Yards). It WAS early in the season and that second half was a Wild West affair where Daniel Jones had one of his arguably best days as a Giant and Barkley mowed down everything in front of him. Also, Waller had a decent impact across the middle with some nice grabs with a few gaining YAC.

But a one-game performance across a couple of seasons does not a dangerous receiver make, I guess.

Peace!

I suspect that sometimes when Hyatt was open, it was because he wasn't where he was supposed to be.   Daboll had made a point to some of his in-house reporters that a receiver being open and not getting the ball isn't always on the QB.  If a QB gets open but isn't where he is supposed to be or where the QB expects him to be, it's not as helpful as some fans believe.

I hope so too. Like any Giants fan I would welcome a breakout season from Hyatt. So far his career has been short on production and long on excuses. If that changes this year, that would be great.

It may be- or hopefully has been- less an issue or a question of route distance and shape than a matter of gray, or an overabundance of cortisol. But I reckon what has been the problem, it will be no more now that he has Russell Wilson' attention. Ya think?

Cheers!
