New York Giants rookie quickly climbing running back depth chart


According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, Tracy "spent a good portion of 11-on-11 drills on Tuesday with the first team" and is already making a push for the backup role.

While Singletary is locked into the RB1 role for the Giants, there is going to be a relatively significant role open as the change-of-pace back.



It seems to me Singletary has the RB1 spot and it's for him to lose. We have an interesting group competing for RB2 and as of now I expect Eric Gray to campaign for RB2, but for me...I do love a RB that can catch. I remember watching the NE Patriots with Curtis Martin in the back field and then later he went to the Jets, and he was a very good runner, but an excellent catcher as well. They could set up plays for him that would trick the defenses, set it up as a fake run, only to a pass that would often lead to positive yards to move the chains. There were times the pocket would collapse, and Martin would leave the pocket (unscripted) and turn around giving his QB a much-needed passing option and avoid a sack for loss yardage


Having converted from wide receiver to running back late in his collegiate career, Tracy is already the best pass-catcher in the backfield.

I hope big things for this kid and hopefully the Giants struck gold with him. I want the Giants to have a running back system by committee, no true RB1. Bring back a form of Earth, Wind and Fire. Let the hot hand be rewarded by playing time.

What impressed me most was his balance after contact.....thats rare.  80% of his yards coming after contact.  Tiki had that talent.  I love RBs that are tough to get to the ground.

I hope he gets playing time.  He has a little Barry Sanders in him too for sure

Also being an X WR we won't have to worry about the drops.  Nice pick up

I'm very surprised at the amount of attention and speculation that has surrounded this player ever since draft day. It's unusual, even for media-centric New York. Is it possible we have actually hit the jackpot and got a player who will be a major surprise?  Every year there is a story about a possible hidden gem unearthed by the Giants' scouting department, but there is something that sets this story apart from the usual rot to which we're exposed annually during the "dullest six weeks" of the football year.  Anyone else sense it? I find any claims of players "moving up" in the depth charts in OTAs to be suspect.  Daboll made it clear that OTAs are teaching camps and that jobs are not won or lost at them.

Yeah, I sense it. Your observation is like a slap in the face to startle me into reality. Every team in the league thinks they stole a sleeper late and are shocked no other team noticed a star player sitting there in round 5 or 6 or whatever. The reality is, after the first couple of rounds, it gets dicey. Third rounders sometimes become great, but after that it's about getting guys to go through professional development for a couple year process. Sure, sporadically a surprise happens (Puka Nacua - 5th rd; Brock Purdy - 7th rd; Ivan Pace Jr. - UDFA, etc.) came up huge, but that is not the norm, as statistics and history confirm

I have big, big hopes that Theo Johnson pans out and that he fell through the cracks right into our lap, but I have to temper my enthusiasm because it's a big step from college to the pros, and Penn State didn't really use him as a pass catching TE, so his step is even bigger, learning the routes and other intricacies of NFL play

Tracy might surprise...I sure hope so, anyway. His athletic numbers indicate that the coaches have a lot to work with (as his RAS score shows), and his experience as a WR makes him a dual threat



...but again, "are we getting ahead of ourselves?". I hope not

The Shuttle, 3C and 10YS are very impressive.

Could he be a Tiki clone?

He could be a very good third down back but I think the "backup" comments are a bit premature. I'm not sure there is such a thing as a backup anymore in today's NFL. Gray figures to get spot duty on running plays and Tracy on passing downs although each could be an every down back in a pinch. Singletary is predictable and Daboll knows what he will get from him from their time together in Buffalo.

Corbin still interests me. Add that when Carolina unexpectedly signed him off waivers and hung onto him, the Giants went back and signed him off Carolina's practice squad. He was active for 10 games last year and played special teams. I don't know if that's all they want from him or not.

Jolly: Yes, that is the other side of the coin.  Every year, while the Giant rookie reported to be "movin' on up" and a pleasant surprise is fizzing out at training camp (falling to Earth), there is ONE team that actually HAS grabbed a true hidden gem, a player well under the radar on draft day who rockets to stardom. My point is... at least one year in my life I expect that to happen to the Giants... and somehow, although I might continue to refuse to believe it, I am beginning to suspect this might be the year, and that might be the guy.  Last time the Giants even came close to a "home run" in this category, it was also a running back who turned out to be very very good, although IMO not a true home run...  Ahmad Bradshaw.  Bob

Rookies moving up charts is what I want to see.

The pass catching aspect may be a big plus for Tracy's surge, apparently. If we can add another in camp (ufl?), okay.

I remember how Matt Forte of the Bears was a solid back in sets, but was terrific catching the ball and getting chunk plays. If Tracy can pass protect aquedately, could be a big surprise for opponents. Has big play speed and elusive.

Bradshaw was a great 7th round pick. A couple of others that could be mentioned are Mark Bavaro (4th rd), and David Diehl (5th rd), but the real gem was Victor Cruz (UDFA). I guess you just never know. Hopefully, this is the year the Giants beat the odds

I'm excited for the RBC. I said it earlier this year and I'm sticking to it: the Giants RBC will be more productive than Saquon.

I am really down on Gray as a back but I wasn't a fan of his selection last year with other backs on the board.

I like Tracy's skill set but there is a reason he was at Purdue. In the portal Era teams find hidden gems and great pieces from anywhere.

I think Corbin was easily our best back in the preseason last season and his 1 cut, burst playing style is just like Singletary. Tracey as the 3rd down back, and Miller as the wild card. Gray until he shows something, anything is not in the equation.
