Quote from: todge on June 25, 2024, 12:11:38 AMDaniel Jones doesn't call the plays. Kafka and Daboll knew that their pathetic pass blocking OL, which was dead last in the NFL last year in that category, couldn't give the QB enough time to allow plays to develop downfield. Thus the dink and dunk offense was gameplanned into most games.

So Ðaboll and Kafka trusted a rookie udfa and Jones' backup to throw deep behind a pathetic pass blocking oline but not Jones? Jones deep ball% actually went up in 2023 compared to 2022 which is scary.

I don't think it was a matter of trust. Taylor and DeVito just took more chances than Jones. They also had the benefit of doing everything they could to stand out and showcase themselves while Jones may have been playing it more safe to not mess up and potentially lose his job.

I think the other thing to remember is the O-line didn't stay static.  The line was as bad as it gets in Dallas.  They did well against the Cards and didn't really start to improve until Justin Pugh (who didn't play great but was a stabilizing factor) joined the team.

Rich,

It's your position the Oline stabilized when they added the NFL's literal worst guard (according to PFF)?  Pugh surrendered 8 sacks and earned a 41 PFF rating.  He was, by EVERY metric, atrocious; there's a reason he's still a FA.

You mentioned PFF.  If you look at PFF pass-blocking grades for the Giants week by week, you will see those grades improved (more like there were less of the really bad grades, below 50).  So, I am not sure I would say it's "my assertion" as much as the PFF grades for really bad blocking were reduced.  I use the really bad blocking grades because having one player with a good grade doesn't help if you have other blockers with pass-blocking grades in the 20s, 30s, or 40s

I can agree with that to an extent especially with Devito but I believe Taylor ran the offense how it was supposed to run without the training wheels as his analytics looked comparable with Allen in BTTR and so on when it refers to going deep. There's a disconnect somewhere that the beat reporters refuse to ask about. Why Taylor and Devito went deep while Jones refused to not just 20, 30, 40 yard plays but even the 10+ yard plays.

I'm not saying I'm right but it stands to reason that Jones had more pressure on him than the other two. Plus, he had more time being shellshocked behind that wet toilet paper line than the other guys. He was more concerned about the rush than the receivers.

Plus Daboll ran a country club camp that didn't prepare the team to compete coming out of the gate.

No I agree, but it was on full display in 2022 as well. He actually threw it deep more on average in 2023 than 2022. So if we only had the 5 games in 2023 each qb played to go on then you are spot on as it refers to that individual season. The problem I have is that even when he was thought to be playing well in 2022, the deep game was nonexistent.

Yet the 2 backup QBs threw longer passes and moved the team downfield much more consistently than Jones did.

Agreed, but this was largely due to the fact he locked on recievers and many times had other options but never looked past his 1st progression.

Take command of your OL and demand they do their jobs well.  Get in their faces when they fail.

Trust yourself to hit tight windows.

You already have FU money so be bold.

He's got to stop thinking that playing not to lose is the same thing as playing to win.
