In this episode, I discuss the crisis in music in two acts:
Act I - Music is too Easy to Make
Act II - Music is too Easy to Consume
...and their cumulative negative effect.

That is an incredibly interesting 12 minutes. Anyone who doesn't take the time to watch it is missing out. Technology has sneaked into areas of our lives we never saw coming, and it is really interesting, yet scary. I am like this guy, in that when I was 16, I worked at Carols (a hamburger joint that also owned Burger King, and wasn't much different), and used money from my first job to buy stereo components, and then after a couple weeks of putting it together, I cashed my measly paycheck and ran over to K-Mart and bought my first album ever: The Bee Gees,"To Love Somebody". I felt as if I "owned" something that my friends did not, and no one could take that away from me or be able to experience the songs anytime they wanted like I could. Made me feel special

I'm sure it could happen with AI, but I'd love to hear AI duplicate the unique voices of the Bee Gees and create new songs. No doubt it could    ...but even superior, which is a shame

On balance, he's more correct than not, but he is also being an "elitist."

There is a school of thought that art is not for the elite (or not ONLY for the elite).

There is some truth in that... if you add the word "popular" to his thesis, it makes more sense to me.  That why they call certain musical genres POPULAR (pop) music!  I get his point, but I think he's missing mine.

But dammit Ric, now I'm craving a Carols Club Burger!! They were far better than a Big Mac, Whopper, or a Wendy's burger for sure.

You might be the only person on this board that even knows what Carrols was...LOL. Headquartered in Syracuse, before moving headquarters to Rochester. But yup, those Club Burgers were the best. And the number of stoners piling in at night for the french fries was insane. And having worked there, I can tell you the "secret sauce recipe". One part ketchup, one part sweet relish, and two parts mayo

A hamburger, french fries, and a soda for 99 cents...my kids wouldn't believe me if I told them that...change back from a dollar

Steve: You could have bought the company (symbol TAST) and had all the Carrols Club Burgers you wanted, but earlier this year Restaurant Brands International (a Canadian company, I think) beat you to it. Bob

Where was that one located Ric?  The one I remember was on Main Street in Endwell, just a mile or so west of the old Henry's Hamburgers, (another lost hamburger joint from my early youth).

Another missed opportunity in a long line of missed opportunities I suppose, Bob. Actually I now do a fairly good job of avoiding fast food joints. But every so often I do get a craving for a burger. During those times I've settled on a double-double at In-N-Out. However I do get it wrapped in lettuce leaves rather than a bun. Makes it feel like I'm being careful about what I eat.

The one I worked at was on Groton Ave., in Cortland in the corner of the KMart and Family Bargain Center plaza if that rings a bell. It was bulldozed and replaced with a bank

Don't pooh-pooh the lettuce thing. In a few respects, the carbs (bun) are worse for you than the meat. Bob

I wonder how long before AI takes over writing books and playwrights. It's going to happen

I took a course in college a couple years ago on "Writing Your First Novel", and another course called, "Getting Your Novel Published". I learned a lot - first and foremost, I'm never going to author a thriller

One of the things I learned was, "the world is a 'fast-food' audience now"...how so you ask! When writing a novel and trying to get it published, if the screener is not "hooked" in the first couple pages, he or she will go no further. If it starts out with a bang, they might commit to the first 100 pages, but it better be something that keeps the reader enthralled, or they'll can it. Then of course, there is a style, like the "W" method...stray from that and "flush"

Interestingly, I asked the professor, a woman who had multiple books on the top 10 list of New York Times over the past couple of decades. I asked her how would books be treated today, like, "To Kill a Mocking Bird" or "The Great Gatsby" or "The Catcher in the Rye" in today's society. She said, "sadly, no publisher would ever publish them", for a multitude of reasons. Novels today are like grabbing a hamburger at Wendy's, or picking up a candy bar at checkout. Unless one is a college student who will be tested on the great writings of the past, the ordinary person has little tolerance for slow moving anything

Anyway, probably the most exciting novel in the next few years will be written by AI...sad

there was a funny episode on South Park a friend of mine pointed out, where the kids found a ChatGPT app for their phone could respond to their girlfriends, making them think they were crazy about them. Stan got so good at it that he would respond to his girlfriend while sitting on the toilet and didn't even bother to look at what she wrote, with a swipe, copy, paste, send motion...meanwhile on the other end of it, the girl is swooning reading all the romantic crap he's writing LOL
