Looking forward to this episode tonight. I have a feeling the calls made by others that it's a better episode will prove to be true. Episode one was a bit dry.

"Throw a touchdown."
HAHA, best answer ever!!

That was a cute answer, but it also was an answer that I don't think impressed Daboll.   Daboll was trying to get a feel for how well Daniels understood the Xs and Os, but "throw a touch down" doesn't show much in the way of understanding the Xs and Os when asked about single high coverage.

I am not nearly versed in the X's and O's to answer this question myself so I'm bringing it to the group:  Is it possible that if the defense is in Cover one against that look/play call the correct answer is throw a TD because it'll put the safety in a position where he has to choose one of two guys to take and the other will be open?

Even if that's not what happened, the fact that he pulled that answer does align with what we saw on the field in that he can think quickly under pressure.  Not every play will go as scripted and he's going to have to improvise especially the first couple years when the team around him isn't that great, so while it might be cute and got a laugh from the group, that ability to think quickly should be useful.

I've been wrong before plenty of times but I really like that kid as a QB and am annoyed the Commanders got him.

Every pass defense has areas of weakness.   So when you run an offense against a given defense, there should be a receiver who you expect to be open to (because he is stressing the weakness).  Daboll was looking for Daniels to identify that receiver in the formation.   So the answer Daboll was looking for was something along the lines of (I am making up the given positions)-  I would expect the X receiver to be open on the flag route; if he's not, then I go with the check down (or something similar).   "I will throw a TD" is an answer that even you could have given to Daboll, even with your admitted limited knowledge of Xs and Os.  Daboll was looking for more from a QB candidate.

Thing is we don't know from that clip what happened right after.  I have the episode recorded so if they go into that I apologize I just watched that clip where they cut it off right there.  But the next question could have been "to who?" and the answer could have been more detailed from there but that's not as good for TV.

These Combine interviews are only 15 minutes long. So, I doubt they had a follow-up question, as they likely had 15 minutes worth of questions to get through.

I think Maye's interview is an example of a good QB interview:

I appreciate that.  But I bet Daniel Jones crushed that when he had his interview too.  When I see Daniels on the field and Maye on the field I like Daniels sooooo much more.  Maye/Daboll were speaking the same language but how does that translate to success on the field?  Just because Maye knows what he's supposed to do, doesn't mean he can actually execute it when the bullets are flying around his head.

I wished the entire episode was stuff like this instead of whether Dabs coukd run a 40 under 7 seconds.

I don't think we see things the same way.  I consider all the information when evaluating a QB important.  That includes what they put on film, their interview work, their testing, what people who know him has to say, etc.

An NFL QB's ability to handle the Xs and Os is important, regardless if you try to diminish that by saying, "Daniel Jones was good with the Xs and Os, and I think he hasn't played well in the NFL."  That is not how I work.  I am not sure what you are actually trying to prove with your comments about Jones and Xs and Os.  It's not like your example made me go, "Oh, I get it; Xs and Os aren't important when you are evaluating an NFL QB."

I am mindful that these players have had professionals prepare them for these interviews.  The players were prepared for these kinds of questions by NFL coaches.  I can't help but feel whoever prepared Daniels told him, if you don't know the answer, say something like, "I will throw a touchdown".

Look, not being Xs and Os savvy doesn't preclude Daniels from a successful career.  It does mean that the team that drafts Daniels will have to create an offense that he can handle.  It's a limiting factor but not an insurmountable obstacle

I am mindful that the Giants don't want to lose a competitive advantage.  While the draft may be over, history says some of these guys could become available via trade, waiver, or free agency.   Giving out all the Giants learned in those interviews would be giving away intel that the Giants have that would help other teams.

But now aren't you're extrapolating that Daniels can't comprehend complex offenses from a single 30 second clip which to me doesn't seem fair to him. Maybe he crushed the rest of that interview with flying colors, maybe he crushed ALL the interviews with flying colors.  We don't know one way or another.

I also agree that everything should factor into a QBs evaluation, but to me the most important factor is how he does on the field.  Which doesn't always prove correct but seems to have less of a margin of error than simply evaluating if a player can read a playbook.

Any QB taken in the top 10 (or probably in the draft at all) is going to be able to explain how a play is designed to work.  Every system is of course different, terminology not exactly the same, but the route tree is the route tree and zone coverage is zone coverage.  So that's why I say it's great if a QB can sit in a classroom and break down every play every decision every nuanced detail of every situation but if they get on the field and all of that goes out the window while they're dumping the ball off 2 yards down the field what have you actually accomplished?

We'll find out soon enough whether Daniels can handle an NFL offense because he's going to be starting from Day 1 over there.  He'll have some hiccups along the way but my evaluation tells me that we're going to see more good than bad, and we're going to see a lot of great things out of him over the next few seasons.

I would not conclude anything about that tiny video snippet of Maye.  He answered some but mostly it was Dabs explaining some verbiage differences.  More of a learning piece IMHO.
