What happens if Jones says no? The Giants have zero leverage and would lose credibility if Jones says no and the Giants just say, "Okay, forget we asked."

What a dumb question.  What person would consent to removing $10M from their pay, and replace a guaranteed compensation with a "CHANCE" to earn the same amount? The Giants have zero leverage to compel DJ to alter his salary this season; plus, it's highly unlikely DJ's next contract will come close to his current one.   He'd be a fool to accept anything less than what the Giants previously agreed to pay him.

If Jones wanted to keep Barkley in his backfield that would be one reason to do something like that.  Assuming he believes the incentives are reachable so he'd get his money anyway, and by doing that it allows Barkley to stay in his backfield, he might do it.  Can't say I would have told him to do it if I were advising him but it's possible. 

It's also possible the Giants feel like he needs Barkley more so than Jones thinks he needs Barkley.  And we're going to find out one way or the other in short order.

He didn't take less money because he hated money.  He did it so they could sign players that would help him win.  Whether it was one single player, like Randy Moss, or 7 players does it matter?  And sure, his wife helps but you didn't qualify that you just asked for an example and I provided one off the top of my head.

I do understand nobody will take a pay cut. But the incentives thing I do think is more likely to happen provided the incentives are super reachable because he's not actually going to lose any money while also making the team better.

I asked for an example of player A taking a pay cut so player B could get more money (exactly the situation being discussed).  Brady's example is similar but not the same

Aaron Rodgers took a pay cut so the Jets could sign Dalvin Cook. Unfortunately, Daniel Jones is not Aaron Rodgers. DJ likely understands he's not getting a second big contract and the team isn't a serious contender, so he has no real incentive to take less money now.

The players who took cuts already had made a lot of money from prior contracts. This is DJ's first contract following his rookie deal plus he only just finished his first year of that contract.  Let's keep that in mind also.

Also since a paycut would be immediate, whatever he gets back in the future should be with some additional amount if anything just for the time value of money, but probably more than that.
