Before FA period ....did Berry not give Schoen numbers ? And Joe says 25 million (guaranteed) 12.5 mil annual keeps Saquon a Giant ?

It seems like a number was there to be offered .... Philly just came in and offered more ... what 26 mil ?

Or did I mishear that conversation?

It seems TECHNICALLY a contract was not offered .... But would have been offered had the eagles not overpay .....

So in the end it seemed like Barkley tried to make the Giants seem like the villain when it obviously wasn't the case

And if I heard the information correctly ... was Joe right that Barkley took 1 mil more to leave ? Vs keeping his legacy ?

The way I understand it, Berry told Schoen what Barkley wanted. Schoen told Barkley that he would let him test the market and that if he got an offer, give the Giants an opportunity to match it.

Barkley got the Eagles offer and did not give Schoen an opportunity to match.

Barkley and his agents are horrible at financial negotiations.

It sounded to me like Schoen heard what it would take, and he passed.

That's what it seemed like in another thread about Mara not being as meddling as we think.

I dont see the Giants as bad guys.  I think it was a smart fiscal move.

He also asked Berry "if we hit those numbers he'll be a Giant right" and the answer he got back was not a "Yes" Which I took to mean that Barkley wanted out and the Giants wouldn't just have to match the best offer but probably beat it.  Berry at the time was estimating what he thought the contract would end up being from the highest bidder and the Eagles went even higher than that!

I think Schoen was not going to budge

He saw Barkley as a 7 million dollar RB

When your boss tells you to go test the market it usually means you should clean out your desk (locker in this case) while you are at it.

When I take my fan hat off and really try to imagine this whole Barkley thing from the sole vantage point of being in Barkley's shoes, I would have probably gotten salty with the Giants' front office by this offseason as well.

I mean, in my mind, I'm one of the best at my position in the league, and I was basically the best player on the offense in 2022. And what happens? They prioritize signing a QB who was basically a decent, mid level starter in 2022 over me, and not only that, they pay him a good three multiples per year more than what I would have been happy taking to be a loyal Giant for life. And then the guy plays very poorly the subsequent year and gets hurt again.

And then, after all that, in the next offseason the GM publicly tells the media he's not ruling out another franchise tag for me and kind of dicks around with me and plays a back and forth negotiation game. I mean I'd probably want out at that point too, if I were him. Especially knowing someone else really covets me. I can understand why he had gotten annoyed by the time the show was shot. Doesn't make me think any less of him as a person.

But, going back to being a fan of the whole franchise, I don't think the Giants made a mistake here. If they made a mistake it was not trading him if/when they could have, knowing they weren't going to be willing to get into a bidding war with another team for an injury-prone RB's second contract.

I am rewatching.  Schoen told Barkley's agent "we are out"

Agreed.  I think this was a done deal as soon as he hit the market.  Schoen was hoping the RB market this year would be the same as last year and it wasn't.  They both knew the numbers it would take to make it happen were never going to happen with the Giants.

As far as Barkley and his agents being terrible negotiators, I'm not sure how that can be true when he is under contract for much larger than anyone on this board thought he'd get.

Fair point. I didn't think he'd be able to get a contract as big as he got. I fully admit that. I am not sure there were a significant number of teams that would have paid him that, but so what, all it takes is one, And I'm not saying there weren't more than one, because I don't know that.

So I agree with you that nobody can, with a straight face, say Barkley and his agent did a bad job. They got a very good contract from one of the best franchises in the league, period. That is the bottom line here.

Do we even know if they are showing the scenes to us in the order they happened?

He had multiple offers before he was eventually tagged. He eventually changed agents because of how bad everything went.

At the end of the day it seemed like Joe threw it out there that 25 mil 12.5 annual would've had him a Giant

Like Joe said in episode 1 ..... if he leaves for 1 mil more he obviously didn't want to be a Giant

Technically an offer wasnt offered ... but it was known what they'd go up too

So Barkley acting like NOTHING was offered or on the table is complete bs
