Quote from: Gmo11 on July 24, 2024, 10:46:59 AMSeemed like Daboll liked Daniels a lot and they would have traded up for either Daniels or Maye if it were possible but the Commanders and Pats had no interest in moving off those spots.

I liked that they had a deal in place with the Bears should both of their WRs have been picked before them.  Much better than Gettleman's philosophy of "panic and do something stupid"

Interesting that they had Nabers as their WR1 in this draft.  Granted they could have filmed that same scene for all 3 WRs figuring they were going to get one of them and only aired the correct one... but I choose to believe they liked him the best because that makes me happier.

This year was easier than some others, but Schoen nailed exactly how the top 10 was going to go.  Not that he's some genius, I'm sure a lot of GMs also knew what was going to happen, but he did get it right and because of that they were not at all surprised.

I'll be curious to see in the next episode if they fielded any calls for the #6 pick for Nabers and what those offers were if there were any.  Given how highly they seemed to have Nabers rated I'm not sure there is much of anything that could have pushed them off of him, but will be interested to see if they were tempted.

They made it clear in the episode that if Nabers or Harriaon were available they were "turnibg in that card" so unlikely they were trading it.  Odunze seemed to be slightly lower tier so if MH and MN gone they were trading back.

Yeah I'm not sure they had Nabers as WR1. I know Groh did but it wasn't clear to me that Schoen did. Sounded like they were pretty close on them. Mara sounded shocked when Groh said he liked Nabers more than MHJ.

As a side/separate observation, Mara seemed way less meddly to me in this episode than the others. He was very present, but he didn't seem to be pushing any sort of obvious agenda in this episode. At least that's how I perceived it.

Losing star players that could be considered the "face of the franchise" can potentially impact revenue.  Players that the team draft generally don't have an immediate impact on the business side of the team.

I tend to agree.  All the time spent on picture taking, bring your daughter to work day, and video-conferencing Dabs with birtday wishes was, for me, a complete wast of time.

One thing I noticed (because I was craving content) was just how much filler they used.  From family-time fun (I love how kids today are not even with their families; they are off on their phones) to scenic shots to stock NFL or college footage, these shows probably have about 20 minutes of actual content.

It's the "Real GMs and coaches of the NFL." Reality TV.

My conclusion was that they felt that Nabers and Harrison WR draft prospects are more certain to be successful in the NFL than the QBs that they might get and that they had to nail the 6th pick.  I agree that Nabers and Harrison are more certain to be successful.  Nabers has me really excited.

Giants' assistant GM offers more detail on how the Giants decided to select LSU wide receiver

Quote"We took all the quarterbacks through the whole gauntlet ad nauseum," Brown told Schrager. "When we got down to it, there was a separation in terms of how we onboard them, what the return may be early on, then compared to the playmakers, whether it's Marv, whether it's Malik."

Brown also confirmed the Giants' interest in quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye.

"We felt great just from a support, a plan, talking with [Brian] Daboll, talking with Joe, the coordinators, that those top-three quarterbacks you mentioned, along with both Marv [Harrsion] and Malik, that would have gave us the best opportunity to really get off and run it," Brown said.

The Giants drafted Nabers, of course. It became increasingly clear watching 'Hard Knocks' that the LSU star was their top choice among the receivers. We even heard Schoen say "C'mon, Malik Nabers. Be there [at No. 6] please," in the hours before the draft.

Why?

Brown said the choice "started to crystallize as we got further in the process."

"So when you talk about going through the whole fact-finding journey with Malik, I think the first thing is giving someone grace. It's knowing, one, what their origin is, how they were raised, the adversity that they've had to overcome, who their support system is," Brown said. "And then, two, highlighting the unseen work. That's the biggest thing with Malik. It's the love of football. And I think when we talk about, yeah, he's got dog, he's got edge, but this guy does work when no one's watching.

"We got countless anecdotes and stories about days off where Malik is in there catching jugs, running routes, doing the extra work where these aren't the things that the average, call it scout or layman knows, but these are the extra tidbits because you're tied into that building. So it's almost like bringing the full, call it story full circle of, hey, this is what he's done, this is what we've seen on game day, but what is his process? You go from the —Everyone sees the A and the Z, but like to me, like the B to Y of — the nooks and crannies of what makes him him, what makes him tick, and how does he respond in those moments when no one's watching?"

I have seen many express disappointment about the scenes with their kids and in their kitchen, etc. I totally understand the complaint, but this family scene filler type stuff happens in literally every Hard Knocks season. If anything this Giants one has way less of that than most if not all of the others I have seen.

So while it is a perfectly fair thing to wish they didn't do that, nobody who has ever watched Hard Knocks before should be remotely surprised by this. We have gotten off easy by there not being more of this type of stuff.

Well, I never watched Hard Knocks before. I will just note that just because something has happened before doesn't make it a good or useful thing.  But it buttresses my view tha Hard Knocks is purely entertainment, not meant to be instructive.  And that I didn't miss anything by not watching previous editions.

In case it wasn't clear, my point was not that because it has been done before means it is good or useful. My point was that it is not unexpected and that if anything the amount of it in this series is less than average.

I thought I made it pretty clear in my post (twice) that I felt the criticism was a valid one, but maybe not.

Jeff,

I think you were clear.  I think the thing worth remembering is that not everyone watching the show is a hardcore Giants fan.  They need to make the show enjoyable for casual fans and fans of other teams as well.  So they need to balance out the in the weeds behind the scenes stuff with some stuff that everyone could enjoy

I had never watched NK before e either so this is all new to me. While I enjoy some of the stuff t hey use as filler, sometimes it sort of gets in the way of the real idea of the show.
AND, I also agree with Kat in that maybe they filmed all 3 WRs being drafted by the Giants and used the one with Nabers as to show he was the one they wanted all along. If they drafted one of the others, could they have made it look as if he was the guy the Giants wanted all along?

Just a couple of thoughts

I believed unless Daniels was available, Schoen had no real thoughts about trading up.
I enjoyed the Acorsi part about trading up for the guy you want as it is a once-in-a-decade thing, make or break your team as with Eli. Again, Daniels was the guy wanted, I really didn't think Schoen wanted Maye and was happy when NE wanted a King's ransom for him. He wanted that WR, maybe to show his faith in Jones and that huge contract. Now if Jones fails, it can't be because of all the excuses already used.

Is it me, or does Mara come off as a lonely man, wandering the halls of the offices with nothing really to do? He seems like he has no energy, no excitement, just a man who seems older than he looks.

On the preview of the next episode it did look as if the Giants were fielding an offer from someone looking to move up, but I was wondering why no one has even called about the #6 spot as of yet. Any team needing a WR in a big way would have tried to deal with the Giants.
I HATE TO INCLUDE THE WORD NASTY< BUT THAT IS PART OF BEING A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM.
