Well sort of except it is different when a QB goes in late rounds and no one saw it.  More like when Chicago chose Trubiskey over Mahomes...or just any other 1st QB that teams passed on when their QB situation was questionable

I don't think it works that way.  You'd have to know right now Penix or JJ or Nix was special and they passed on a special QB in order to draft a WR to have Schoen look bad and I don't think that's the case.  There are flaws with all those guys, and for me I would include Maye as well, as guys I wouldn't have graded as worth the 6th pick in the draft.  So in my opinion the only comparison to Gettleman would have been if he HAD taken a QB this year simply because there was a QB to be taken rather than taking who he saw as the best player available. 

Gettleman had no business taking Jones at 6.  None whatsoever.  Even waiting until 17 while more defensible would have been a mistake.  But at 6?? Insane. No reasonable GM would have done that.  Schoen held to his convictions and his draft board and took who he thought was the best player available.  It was the right call.  If Nabers busts, then his grading should be called into question but not the decision.

Schoen will look awful.  With the 6th pick, they were evaluating deeply probably 8 players with 3 being at the all important QB position, a position of need.  If anyone of those succeed well above DJ in their rookie year, Schoen, Dabs and the Giants should be put over hot coals over it and roasted.  They will have failed in their eval of the prospect and in believing DJ woukd rise up.

I disagree hugely if one is on a better team and succeeds he is somehow "less good."  He has to identify and make the right blocking assignments, identify the coverage, read the coverage after the ball is snapped and make the throw.  That is all on the QB.

Exactly. Plus there is a difference between passing on QBs when you are/were directly interested in drafting one that year versus passing on one if you're more or less set at the position.

I think the Brady example is significantly different from the Giants passing on the aforementioned QBs.

By the way, just to clarify my own position on this, I'm personally happy the Giants didn't draft any of those three QBs. I say that not because I know they won't be good (I of course don't know that), but because I like that we have a GM with the discipline to resist using the sixth pick in the draft on a QB he does not have sufficiently high conviction on to pull the trigger.

I only asked the question because I'm curious how people think he'll be perceived if one or more of those QBs turns into a bona fide star.

Jones was MVP of the Senior Bowl and lit up the Combine with his athleticism and arm  talent. Path to the Draft and numerous websites had Jones a 1st Rounder the entire process. Mel Kiper was talking up Jones the entire Draft and mocked him to the Giants at 6. After the Draft, Phil Simms stated on WFAN/Boomer Esiason Show that he knew for certain that four teams that would have taken DJ before 10 if the Giants passed.

It's pretty safe to say that Jones was highly rated by scouts and NFL Front Offices and not a surprise at all he was a top 10 pick.

Think the brass are going to ask fans to buy a lemon in Jones for one more year, then pivot to a qb of the future priority one.

That probably will give Dabes and Schoen more time to get their guy. That's a scenario I can see happening

If they miss on that guy...kaboom 

If one of those guys become a great QB (your word), a few other GMs will look really bad plus Schoen.  I try its highly unlikely that all 3 of Williams, Daniels and Maye become great.  I can even make a case that none of them become great QBs.  Schoen will look bad for sure even if Nabors becomes the second coming of Jerry Rice.  But, the GM who took z QB in picks 1-3 look worse.
