"During the week, I'm helping Dabes put together the offense, talking about the scheme, talking about the players, talking about our roster and what that looks like on the offensive side of the football. At the practice field, I'm helping complement the coaches and help coach and orchestrate how we're going to operate on offense as far as practice flow, organizing drills and how we're going to do those things," Kafka told reporters. "It's an open communication, and it's things that pass through me to Dabes, and we talk about how Dabes wants to run it, and then we go back and execute it for him."

Kafka continues to take the high road but it's easy for anyone to see that his role has been dramatically reduced despite the portrayed "promotion."

"I'm going to take it as a learning approach, learn as much as I can from the people around me, and then contribute as best I can, whether I am calling plays or I'm not. Whatever that situation looks like. I'm going to do my best to help the team win," he said.

Thank you very much for sharing this article as it helps provide insight to a question many have wondered since Kafka was promoted.

My opinion hasn't changed in that I believe he is being groomed to become a head coach in the not too distant future (e.g. perhaps take over for Andy Reid when he steps down).

He primarily talks about helping with the offense; however, I have a feeling he is also learning about the ins and outs of being a head coach behind the scenes, regardless whether he chooses to acknowledge it or not.

It is natural that he leans on his strengths this time of the year. But I'm sure he's been following Daboll around to learn the other things a head coach must do. I have no doubt he talks to Andy Reid on a regular basis as his mentor. All of it will provide him the support he needs to develop further into a head coach one day. But he may need one more stint as an offensive coordinator, with successful results, before he is in demand as a head coach. Would Kansas City give that opportunity to him after Reid retires? Or will the Giants keep him on board for greater areas of responsibility?

That sounds like the role of one of several offensive assistants on any team, not the role of the offensive coordinator.

Offensive coordinators usually lead offensive meetings, lead the designing of the offensive game plan each week, and (usually) call plays.

Kafka is doing none of the above, based on all the reporting.

To me it looks like he belongs on the Stock Dropped list.

It has been suggested here, fairly recently even, that Kafka could get an NFL head coaching job as soon as next year. I don't see that at all myself, as I agree with the previous poster that his "stock is down."

If the Giants were to let him go, what would his NFL options be? QB coach somewhere maybe? I struggle to even see him getting another NFL OC job right now, let alone a head coaching job in the NFL.

He might be able to get a HC job at a top 50 college program though. Or at the very least an OC job at a very high profile program. That might be the best path for him at this point if he is looking for a quick ascent.

He's young, I try to be optimistic and think "What would I do in this situation?" Why pout about it when I can use the opportunity to learn and grow for future opportunities?

I would hope Kafka is thinking along those lines. If not, I would have let him go altogether.

He doesn't seem like the pouting, sulking type. Obviously I don't know the man and I have only heard him speak a little bit, so my opinion is not based on much data and therefore could be completely wrong, but that is just how he comes off. Moreover I doubt he'd be there still if he were btching and moaning.

Perhaps he has aspirations of certain types of jobs and felt out the market for him and didn't love any of the opportunities that came back. So he decided to stick around for another year and try to learn more.

Given that a number of teams expressed interest in interviewing him for their offensive coordinator positions, it would appear that Kafka is thought of in well enough regard to at least be considered for a horizontal move should he no longer wish to move forward with the Giants in his current capacity.

That he felt comfortable enough to move aside into the Assistant Head Coach role, he is acknowledging an opportunity to grow with the Giants this coming season despite the fact he will not directly affect the offensive strategy or game planning. Instead, his role appears to be more of project managing which, depending how complex Daboll's offense is, might be a good opportunity for Kafka to ensure the players and assistant coaches are all on the same sheet of music.

I also agree that he may be playing his cards close to the vest and may be waiting until next season to see if the "right opportunity" becomes available for him to apply to.

But if the Giants happen to have some success this season, by virtue of this Assistant Head Coach relationship becoming value-added, maybe it develops into a synergistic role that helps both Daboll and Kafka develop into very good to outstanding NFL professional coaches one day.

Learning from Dabes ??  Oh that's right he was Coach of the Year two years ago.

What a crappy situation to be stuck in for a paycheck.  Seriously I am shocked John Mara actually allowed this blocking hm from leaving.
