I see a three-way contest for the final O-line roster spot

Assuming no injuries and the Giants keeping 10 O-line here is how I see it

Making the roster- Andrew Thomas, Jermaine Eluemunor, John Michael Schmitz, Jon Runyan, Greg Van Roten, Josh Ezeudu, Aaron Stinnie, Evan Neal, Jake Kubas

Fighting for the final spot-  Austin Schlottmann, Joshua Miles, Jalen Mayfield

Out: Jimmy Morrissey, Matt Nelson, Yodny Cajuste, Marcus McKethan, Marcellus Johnson

Even though he is the 2nd string center, I don't think Scholottman has a roster spot nailed down.  The Giants constantly put guards at center make me believe they are willing to go G/C hybrids as backups rather than a pure center like Schlottman.

It's possible the team keeps only 9 or that the return of injured Tyree Philips grabs the 10th spot.

My likely favorite (assuming no Tyree) is Jalen Mayfield.  He's a former 3rd round Falcon pick who isn't even 25, so there is still upside.

If Schmitz stinks again at center, what do you think the plan will be? Just tolerate it all year and hope he improves (a la Neal in 2023), or will they bench him and put someone else in that spot?

Right now he's the one guy that I am counting more on hope than any sort of confidence with.

It's hard to say; I don't think his play has been poor enough to give up on a 2nd rounder in year two. Still, his struggles really don't impact the rest of the race.

If the Giants did want to bench him I could see Van Roten at center and either Stinnie, Neal, or Eluemunor backfilling at guard

I agree with you.. Since last year was only JMS' rookie year, and since it was a beyond-dysfunctional year for our O line in general, I am not expecting a transformative year for him where he's suddenly a great center. I do think he needs to display market improvement though from the levels he was at last season. I am also reminded by the fact that, although he has only one actual season in the NFL, he is already 25. The fact that strength was a major issue for him at 24 bothers me.

I thknk the Giants should be prepared to be patient this year with him, but if he is downright bad again and you're not seeing any signs of improvement by say the week 9-10 type range, I'd start to get worried about him in a more long term way. I'm already concerned as it is. It's not like we haven't seen plenty of rookie centers around the league play much better than JMS did last year.

The question could likely be answered by the waiver wire. We all know that Schoen watches it like my aunt used to watch soaps...may she RIP

If a quality OL falls through the cracks and onto the wire, Schoen will be fully aware
The fact that Keith Richards has outlived Richard Simmons, sure makes me question this whole, "healthy eating and exercise" thing

It was my understanding that Jon Runyan has been mentioned by Dabs as being a backup center.

I woud like to think the line has reached a point where a waiver wire pick up would not be an upgrade

I think that was before they got Van Roten.  I believe he'd be the C and Stinnie goes to G.

Makes sense

Stinnnie is also a vet, right?  On paper this looks so much better than 2023.

Can you explain why he "stinks" last year?....if you are gonna quote PFF stats or whatever it is then please say no more because that is a bunch of malarky.

Oline is more than individuals. The kid was a rookie. I saw a star RB who consistently ran straight into his oline. I predict we will see a new crop of backs who (may not have as many breakout runs) but will be way more consistent. And if that happens JMS is likely to be in the thick of it.

I think our oline coach stunk last year. If we have a transformation this year we will have a better barometer to debate. At least I hope so. But I'm not in the camp that says JMS stinks last year

I watched all the games and watched him play. I thought he played consistently poorly all year. You're free to disagree if you saw it differently.

I didn't say he won't be improved this year. I am hoping he will be. Last year I don't think he was good at all.

But what barometer do we use for a  Center?....if his Guards stink doesn't that matter?...what about the coaching or poor decisions by Saquon?...I realize there isn't a set answer for this. Maybe we find out this season.
